    Hey there,

I am in the process of buying a RAM upgrade for my laptop. It's the Satellite M40-SF3 model as mentioned in the topic. It's currently running WinXP Pro, 512mb RAM. I would like to upgrade, but I have a question:

On the Toshiba.ca website under ShopToshiba section, I checked out the memory upgrades (im not really gonna buy it there.. pretty expensive) but it mentions I need the Kingston KTT3311/1GI ( i want to add 1GB of ram into the laptop). This is fine, and i recall it says the same thing in my Toshiba manual as well, that the recommended is KTT3311 part number for the compatible ram. but my question is, I then go onto Kingston's website and search up Toshiba\M40\PSM40C-SF300E for ram and it states I need the KTT3311A/1GI 915.

Anyone upgrade ram yet? Which will I need? KTT3311/1GI or KTT3311A/1GI.??? I tried calling Toshiba up today, but they couldnt figure it out, they were gonna switch me to a level 2 techy but they were busy.. got a call number and they are supposed to call me back, or I'm supposed to call them back, i forget..

    Thanks.

I just checked my M40 manual and yes it says the same thing, but the strange thing is a friend of mine has an M40 and has upgraded his ram, and its not any of those mentioned. I wonder why Toshiba has said that only those modules can be used....

Im not too fluent with notebook memory.. I just want the best working ram for the laptop. if it were a desktop I can trust OCZ.. but the manual states that the Toshiba works its best with Kingston KTT3311 series so i guess thats enough to sell me? A friend of mine actually HAD to upgraded his A70 with KTT3311A ram as recommended from Toshiba because some of the generic branded ones didnt fit.. (i think he mentioned the ram stick was bulkier then the KTT3311A series so it couldnt snap into place and shut/screw in the cover).

Did anyone open up the ram slot for M40-SF3? What kind of ram is in there? Obviously its 512mb.. but is it Kingston KTT3311/512mb as they say works best?

The type of RAM you need is PC2700 333 MHz DDR 200 pin SO-DIMM. You don't need KTT RAM at all, I would go with this RAM:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820172105

It is a KVR RAM which means Kingston Value RAM, kind of a generic. I bought my M60 about a month ago, and I went to NewEgg and bought 1 stick of 1024 (1GB) of KVR RAM, the only difference is the KTT means specifically for Toshiba, KTD for Dell, etc. I haven't had one problem with my RAM since I have installed it and it cost about 1/5 the price Toshiba wanted. The KTT and KTD mean that it has passed the specifications for the respective companies, and the KVR isn't tested as rigorously, but if you should happen to receive a defective stick of RAM, NewEgg is very easy to deal with to get a new stick. I just couldn't see spending an extra $68 for basically the same thing. ($203 vs. $135)
