Hi !
Thanks for the review. What video card does this laptop have?
I am trying to resolve this for the past week. I know that there is not such a thing as FX 6600 Go GPU. I talked to people from Nvidia ( California) and they confirmed this fact. The Toshiba people did not have an idea and I am in the process of getting more info from Toshiba technician. The computer stores just copied Toshiba www site so they show the same GPU info.
There is a FX 5600 Go GPU and there is a 6600 Go GPU but there is no FX 6600 Go GPU.
I contacted the guy who was reviewing the new Nvidia 6600 GPU and he was saying that there must be a typo somwhere. He confirms what Nvidia people told me.
So, what video card Toshiba M40 JC3 has?
-
Geforce 6 series 6600 Go with 128 dedicated DDR ram.
FX is the weakest line nVidia has ever produced. This is the next line.
More info is here: http://www.bit-tech.net/feature/75/
Like I said in my review, this card is THE second best mobile graphics card from nVidia, the king is 6800 but that sucks up like three times as much power and produce lots of heat. -
One more thing. Check the response I got from the author of Nvidia 6600 Go review
"I used the theoretical values for the NVIDIA GeForce FX Go 5600 for comparison purposes, as that was NVIDIA's previous solution in the "Performance-Thin" segment of the notebook market. With the release of the GeForce 6 series back in April, they decided to get rid of the whole "FX" branding. I can only assume that this is because the GeForce FX series was possibly their worst line of graphics cards that they've ever had, if you compare it to what the ATI had at the time. So the correct name is as stated in the preview - NVIDIA GeForce Go 6600.
I'm not 100% sure about the laptop, it could contain either a GeForce Go 6600 or a GeForce FX Go 5600, so there is a typo somewhere. The best thing to do here would be to email Toshiba and get them to confirm exactly what GPU they are using in that notebook, let me know if you don't get a reply and I will try and chase them up too."

Hi!
Thanks for the reply. Again I repeat my question - how did you find out what video card your laptop has? The "second line" technical support from Toshiba told me today, Feb 17 2005, that M40 has most likely the FX 5600 GPU video card. What is written in the specs might be the typo error. Please, do not rely on the specs alone. Read my description above to see the fine distintion between FX5600Go and 6000Go.
Question - how did you find out the type of video card your Toshiba M40 JM3 laptop has? Do not tell me you read it in the specs.
Thanks for the patiance and your reply.

I know what you are saying, at first I suspected the same thing not because of Toshiba's sketchy specs, but because the guy I bought from was kinda shady. But, if Geforce FX 5600 can reach scores over 13000, it has to be quite special! Geforce FX 5700 128mb overclocked to 350/650 can barely touch 12000.
Unless there is some kind if hack that makes XP recognize your video card as Geforce 6600 Go, then I believe I have the real deal. Just borrowed friend's copy of Half Life 2 today, dont worry I dont really like the game and wont be playing online, it was averaging 77 fps, down to 59 during scenes with lots of monsters and fire, but usualyl 70+. I dont think FX Go cards can do this. -
I've got the M40 and it has the nVIDIA GeForce Go 6600. I confirmed this through the hardward system configuration.

Thanks for checking and info. Do you have express card slot in your M40? Toshiba specs say yes but one guy on toshiba forum was saying - no, it doesn't have it - just the "outline" on the casing. What about your M40? Thanks for the answering.
-
Well I also can confirm that the ExpressCard slot is closed off with a piece of plastic. Looks like it was gonna be there and then they just blocked it off. I don't know if they have the actual wiring and stuff done or not. Perhaps if you can find a way to get it off it'll work...[?]

I was told that pc express slot is taken by GPU so that is why it "looks" closed off. I found this out going through other posts about M40 laptop. I will try to confirmed this fact with Toshiba. If you know more about it - let us know.
