Hi all, I am new here, and I am looking for some assistance with my DVD Burner that came with my Satellite notebook. It is a slim Mat****a DVD burner. As of late, it seems to be on the fritz. Everytime I load a CD or DVD into it and I want to burn something, it never registers right away, and I have to keep opening and closing the drive until I hear the CD start to spin. This can get rather annoying, so I am looking to get a better drive. So what I am trying to find out is if there is another alternative. Basically, can I go and buy any internsl SLIM DVD burner for this laptop and install it? Right now its a DVD-R/RW drive, and I guess I would like to buy one that can do both DVD+/- media. The only reason I am on here asking is because I was afraid to just go out and purchase any SLIM internal DVD drive, because I didnt want to have compatibility issues. So if anyone has any information, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks.

    Parisi2274,

Regarding the issue with your burner, I would recommend sending the drive in for service. The reason why I suggest this rather than buy a new drive is because you may get a different model/brand/revision of burner. The problem you're having may just be that the drive is defective or it could be the brand/model. I've seen units go in for repair with one model/brand of drive and come out with a completely different one. They manufacturers use whatever drives that fit the specs, and at the time it was a Matsu****a (I believe that's how it's spelled) which is a sister/parent company of Panasonic. After the service, you may end up with a Toshiba burner.
Try getting it repaired first, and if it doesn't fix the problem, you could always go out and buy a drive.

Well, if you still have the issue after getting it fixed, theres a possibility it may be an OS or system issue.

First, see if the drive spins up properly while not in the OS. Eject the drive & power off the system, stick a bootable CD into the drive and power back on. If the drive spins up OK & the system boots off the CD the first time without issues, then it's possible the OS is causing a problem. But, if it still requires multiple ejects before it works, it's not narrowed down to a hardware problem. Get the drive repaired & if the problem still exists, possibly the systemboard or controller is defective and you should get that replaced. You may want to mention that to Toshiba & have them test it out when you send the unit the first time.

I don't know of any shops that sell these drives, but they do have them listed on eBay. But it's risky getting it from there because you don't have it in front of you to see/compare with your original. If you do buy a drive & it fits, you still have to be concerned about the face plate/bezel. The eject button/LED & eject hole are located in different positions on some drives and therefore may not lineup properly with your original face plate. Do a search for "slim internal notebook dvd+-rw" (without the quotes) in Google, you should be able to locate a few websites/companies that sell these drives.

Also, the face plates can be user replacable, but it differs from brand to brand.

Sorry to revive a dead topic but I just joined and I have same problem and wondered if you found a solution.
It works 90% of the time in general use but some times, it just fails to spin up.
I have probably only been able to burn one DVD successfully and fear trying anymore because of expensive coasters.
I wish there was a DVD+/-R replacement and one without DVDRam (I get a nag screen on every bootup about it).

    Zimmy,

You may want to try starting a new thread, you may get more views.

Regarding the drive, you should just send it in for repair. It looks like it's problematic bacause of the error message and problems burning. Issues with buring could also be the media you're using.

If you just want to buy a replacement drive, you can get one from www.UltraDrives.com as they sell optical drives for notebooks. They only cost approx $140US for a DualLayer Toshiba drive. This may resolve your burning problems, but it could also be your OS/Software. Try reloading the system as one of your last resorts.

Sorry to revive this topic again but I'm just returning to it...

How could I be sure that the Toshiba drives on UltraDrives.com will work with my P25-S609?
They have 2 listed as Toshiba drives at their site.

I have exactly the same problem with my toshiba satellite p25 s-609. Sometimes it works but mostly not. I think the problem has worsened over time. If I put a cd or dvd in the drive it tries to spin and then stops.Sometimes after repeated ejecting and reinserting the thing will play. But usually if I look under 'my computer' the software doesn't appear there, just the empty drive image. If I click on it, I get the familiar I/O device error. Sometimes if I leave the software that I want to install in the drive, eventually, perhaps the next day it will suddenly autoplay and let me install it. As for trying to burn anything, forget it. I no longer bother trying.
I am loath to send my computer off for repair again after having done so a while back (for another issue...I forgot to mention this one) and having to wait over a month to get it back from Toshiba.
So if anyone can point me to somewhere online that sells the correct item, guaranteed to fit and be compatible, I will gladly buy one! Can you help?

I think I've found a correct replacement dvd burner for the toshiba satellite p25 s609 (though there may well be others) online at Priority Electronics. You can search there under the type of item required and also your particular model of laptop. The suggested part was K000004190 and cost $149. I have ordered one and will post again here if it turns out as hoped. I was impressed that when ordering, the company suggests that you include the exact model of your laptop so that they can verify the part is appropriate before going ahead and sending it.
Other info: They take credit cards and paypal (Non US orders are required to use paypal. For credit card payments the shipping and billing addresses must be the same and no p.o. boxes, but not so for paypal (which suited me being an expat australian who frequently has hassles trying to purchase online with my Aussie card).
Other than this, I know nothing about the company, have not dealt with them before so am not making any recommendations either of P.E. or the part I ordered. Just throwing some info out there in hopes that it might help someone else. I had no idea until happening upon this site today that I was not alone in having dvd problems with this otherwise (in my opinion) excellent laptop. I hope we can all resolve the problem.
