L305-S5944 System Unit, Model number PSLB8U-0VN037

Laptop powers on, I see the first screen which gives you the option to go to the BIOS then on the next screen all I see is a cursor blinking on top left on a blank screen then some sort of small icon appears on the left of the cursor and that's it, doesn't go any further, help please?

    Umm, more info?

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode, or booting into the Windows boot disk to repair your installation?

Safe Mode does not work, I even tried the system recovery and that doesn't work, the system just says "loading files" then hangs. I guess the only thing I can do is try to reload the OS from cd but my son can't find the cd, I have the same OS on cd which came with my desktop but will that work on his laptop?

If your desktop is a prebuilt, then it most likely won't.

Your laptop should have an inbuilt recovery partition, for situations like this. Activated by pressing a hotkey upon boot. Toshiba has more information on their website.

Ouch, it's possible. Have you tried the hard drive in an external enclosure?
