My gf is thinking about getting a netbook which I'm trying to talk her out of. I recently came across the T100 series which are comparable in price, but I would imagine performs better. Any thoughts?

    DON'T GET THE NETBOOK

They are too slow and the sluggishness will drive you up a wall

/Wife is the former owner of a netbook

I did that mistake twice... Don´t do it, i am waiting for the T110 series in Europe as well, as the Acer 1810TZ has a inferior build quality.

I like my little acer aspire netbook (the build quality is fine!), but I'm thinking of replacing it with an acer Timeline and/or a Toshiba equivalent when they come out... I want the bigger 11.6" screen with a full 1024x768 (rather than 1024x600) resolution, and the faster processor would be nice too.

The netbook certainly has its uses, though. I don't have any problems with browsing the net, email, watching video on the machine (streaming video stutters a bit to my big screen TV but if it's on the drive it's fine)... etc. Heck I even have WoW installed on it, though my frame rate in Dalaran is like, 4 ;)

Just in time for the window 7 invasion, Toshiba has announced a new line of slim laptops, dubbed the T100 series. With Intel ultra-low-voltage processors (or ULV), the 13.3-inch T135 and 11.6-inch T115 are both less than one inch thick, have LED displays, and multi-touch touchpads.

Like other recent Toshiba laptops, they have the useful sleep-and-charge feature, which lets you use a USB port to charge iPods and other devices, even when the system is asleep or off.

Here are some basic specs for the two new models, and stay tuned for a full review of the 13-inch T135, currently undergoing testing in the CNET Labs. Both will be available starting October 22.

I'm personally fond of Toshiba since I started w/ a Portege w/ P3 500MHz process, forgot the model number, but ever since then, it's always been a Satellite with my last 4 being 5105, A65, M35X, and now A305 :D

I would like to get a T100 (or maybe a ASUS UL30) notebook but since i need it mainly for programming in visual studio and that sort of things (NOT for gaming nor game development) and it has a CULV processor, is it still a good choice? I like it's size and weight as i travel so much. What do you say? Thx.

What makes you say Asus and which model would you reccomend? People seem to like the Acer other than the fan noise/build quality & the Toshiba seems to have better build quality and I like the usable USB port that can charge when the laptop is off.

When I use to build computers, Asus was the board to get. Toshiba I've always felt were innovative w/o having to break the bank.

I'd also like some more detailed info on this machine. I've been looking into the Acer 1410 and 1810tz and the Toshiba t100 is giving me some serious second thoughts.
Does anyone know how the screens compare? The acer is very glossy, I would prefer something matt and less reflective. Also how does the material surrounding the touchpad and the touchpad itself compare? The Acer seems to be brushed plastic which is not very appealing. Although the Acer appears to be superior in performance, as I would like to have my next purchase for a few years, and am not doing anything particularly resource intensive, if I could find a model that has superior build quality I would be happy to give up on the Acer. This model seems to be the closest to accomplishing that.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My opinion may be biased, but I think Toshiba makes a better laptop than Acer and Asus who are relative newcomers to this arena. My dad has Asus laptops, they're "usable" but that's all I'd say about them. I love my A305 and if the T100 is anything like it, it'll be . It may be on the glossy side though as that seems to be what Toshiba's going with now w/ their fusion finish, but at the same time, you don't get the glossy keys on your keyboard because the matte plastic got worn down to a shine..lol. The touchpad on my A305 is also seamless, so there's no dust and crumbs that'll sneak into the crack between the top bezel and touchpad and into the unit. Hopefully Toshiba integrates these features into the T100 too.

That is pretty bias, as Acer and Asus are not newcomers at all. Especially Asus being an Original Design Manufacturer, that means they actual manufacture laptops for other companies. Asus has made laptops Sony, Compaq, IBM, Dell and Apple.

FYI - I hit every retail outlet in my area that carries Toshiba, Acer, HP, and ASUS today. The biggest disappointment of all the models I was scouting out was the Toshiba T135 series.

Every single one (saw 2 different models at several stores) was sluggish, slower than the Celeron and Atom systems sitting next to them. Even convinced on retail salesperson to let me shut down all unnecessary processes, didn't help. Toshiba may have a serious issue on their hands, as no other SU4100 system I saw performed anywhere close to as poorly as the Toshiba.
