Well, I broke down and ordered one as soon as it showed up on Amazon. I expect it to arrive tomorrow.
According to the Toshiba site, the one that I ordered, the T115D-S1120 has a dual core neo. I'm starting to wonder about that, but we will see tomorrow. I've been wanting a Congo based ultra portable for months, and the Toshiba looks to have everything I want - HDMI, eSata, and the HD 3200.
I'll post thoughts here when it arrives!
-
Well, I got it today, and as I suspected, the website is wrong. So it has to go back but here are some impressions right now. The s1120 has a single core neo, not dual-core as the website (and amazon) states. Luckily, I will be able to exchange it for the S1125 with the x2 1.5ghz.
Build Quality - very solid. It feels sturdy and while it is plastic, it doesn't feel "plasticy" like the Acer 1410. The fit and finish is very nice. The battery doesn't protrude out the back like on the x100e.
Battery - So far, battery life has seemed to be pretty good. I'll have to offer more thoughts on that later, since I haven't had time to run it down, but just installing things on battery only it has barely moved at all. Note that it's for the single core, if nothing else, at least I get the opportunity to test with both the single core before it goes back and the dual core when I get it.
Bloatware - Bloatware isn't too bad, though there is your usual Norton "please buy me" screen, the Google toolbar forced on you when opening IE so that you can immediately download a real browser, and the various and sundry Toshiba apps. The video drivers were ancient, but it comes loaded with 7 x64.
Memory is 2GB in single channel mode. I actually have a 4 GB dual channel kit waiting to go it the one that I keep, so I will also be able to give the performance differences between single channel and dual channel.
Heat - to be honest, even while running 3DMark06, I haven't "heard" a fan. I'm sure it's running, and there is warm air coming out of the vent, but I don't hear it. The left side of the keyboard is a little warm, but I'm pushing it. It's a bit warm on the bottom, too, but not what I would describe as "hot".
Ports - eSata, HDMI, VGA out, Wireless is very strong and fast connected to my Wireless-G router. Didn't test LAN since I have no ports available on my switch right now.
Keyboard and Tpad - Keyboard doesn't flex, and the letter keys seem to be of normal size to me. The tab key is the tiniest key I've ever seen on a keyboard, and I've repaired/serviced and owned more laptops than even I remember. It's that small. The shift keys aren't much bigger, but they aren't as ludicrous as the tab key. Enter and backspace are bigger than letter keys, and the spacebar isn't bad, either. Page up and Page down are available in what I consider a normal place, as are the arrow keys.
It doesn't bother *me* (other than the tab key) but I'm female with long feminine fingers. Travel seems fine. It's island style.
Tpad - it has a textured surface and is very nice to use, IMHO. I am a tapper, so I rarely use the buttons, but this does have the single bar. It's fairly firm, and seems fine to me. The thing that I like about it is that the buttons don't hang over the lip of the laptop like on the Acer 1410 or the Lenovo x100e. I'm not thrilled with the scrolling so far, though it works, and I'm going to get some new drivers and play with sensitivity.
That's it for now, I'll be doing a bit of benchmarking for this one now before it goes back to let you know how it performs single vs. dual core. If anyone wants something specific tested, let me know.
EDIT: More thoughts on the keyboard. The tab key was so shocking, that I neglected to notice Alt, Win and Fn. They are, if that is possible, tinier than the tab key. Alt, Win and Fn are *small*, too. Ctrl is okay. It's not unusable, but be prepared for certain keys to be very netbook-ish. -
Thanks for the impressions. I'm considering this too, with the dual core config.
-
Couple of new things - battery life is really good. I ran it for 3.5 hours on battery while installing things across wifi and watching a movie. I installed flash 10.1, and flash HD plays fine.
I'm still in single channel mode, and this is right out of the box with the exception of updating the video drivers. I got just under 1000 in 3dMark06, which isn't bad at all for a single core processor. Even an Intel 4500 will do 3dMark06 though (700ish) with the CULV, so that doesn't really tell us much.
What I *will* tell you is that I played Mass Effect through the first planet with it. Try that on anything with Intel graphics. I have shadows turned off and everything set to low, but it doesn't look bad because the screen is smaller. I had resolution at 1024x600. I haven't tried anything else yet - besides watching a .264 movie (300), HD youtube full screen, and ME. I'm really pleased even as it stands in single channel and with a single core processor.
The fact that I installed things across wifi, watched an entire movie and played a bit of ME on battery tells me that with normal usage, the battery should be quite good. I got about 3.5 hours doing all of that and had around 20% still left. I look forward to getting the dual core - I think it will offer a lot better performance along with the dual channel kit.
This is a *very* impressive little notebook in a netbook package. I regret that I have to send it back and wait for the other one! -
What color did you get ? The red one looks slick. Black is what i"d most likly get.. I can't decide if i want the 115 or 135 for casual web surfing around the house. Mosty laying in bed, watching tv..
-
I expected battery life to be a lot worse given the comments thrown around about AMD cpus, but I find it to be quite good for my needs. -
Did you find the keyboard comfortable to touch type on, or was the layout awkward? If you were in my position, both laptops same price and you don't care about the graphics or battery life, which would you pick?
Thanks for your impressions, I never really considered the Toshiba an option until now. -
I'm the wrong person to ask, because I made my choiceI love the Toshiba. Whatever they may have done in the past is not present in this one - it's nice.
-
Ahbeyvuhgehduh Lost in contemplation....
Good review thus far ... I am curious to see your benchmarks on the laptop as well....
-
how about inside? can you pop out the crappy "g" wirelesss and throw an "n" w/bluetooth combo fairly easy or do you have to dismantle the whole thing.
-
toshibadirect has the red one available with the NeoX2.
-
Did you consider the T135? It is a 13" machine, available with a dual core low voltage intel processor. I have mixed feelings about this recommendation because I bought 2 and one had a keyboard problem. We are currently waiting for its replacement.
I liked the 13" screen of the T135 better than a smaller screen, I liked the light weight, I liked the processor/memory/hard drive specs, and I liked the price. BestBuy has the black one at a good price. Online retailers have it in white, red and black. They all have a "carbon-fiber-like" pattern under the surface of the color. In reviews the red was stated as being more of a pink. I have not seen one in person but I've seen the black and white. The black one looks good, somewhat generic and the glossy finish does pick up fingerprints easily. The white one looks really good and doesn't show up the fingerprints as much. The machine seems plenty fast for running normal apps under Win7. Some negatives- the double-ended touchpad button is a little hard to use until you get used to it, the machine is very thin but the battery sticks out the bottom a bit, and the screen quality is best if you look at it straight on, not at an angle. I found reviews comparing this machine to the similar hp, acer and asus machines, and they were rated better but not by that much and they are all more expensive. -
I just ordered one of these as well with the dual core CPU. Just to make sure, yours shipped with one 2 Gb DDR2 ram stick leaving the 2nd slot open. Is that an accurate statement? How long did it take to get it from Toshibadirect?
Thanks,
Steve -
I can't speak for the quality of 13", but I'm pleased with the 11.6 with the AMD/HD3200.
- it has two dimm slots, on is open the other has a 2GB chip. It came with Windows 7 x64. I got mine from Amazon because I had a gift certificate from there. If you got it from Toshibadirect, beware because the T115D-S112 0 is listed as a dual core, but it is a single core. The T115D-S112 5 is the dual core one. I have to send mine back to Amazon on Monday so I can exchange it for the S1125 with the X2.
-
i didnt consider the t135d cause i wanted 12" or smaller, the dm3v hp has been available for some time now with the congo dual core platform, but I fell in love with the 12" size of the u210 and dont want any larger than that.
those of you that own the t115d already can you look inside and see where the wireless card is and if there is an open mini pcie. wireless n is a must for me and the first thing i would have to do is swap out the g card it comes with and put an N card in its place -
-
If anyone has suggestions, I'd be glad to use that battery bench
. I've already got the other one coming, and I'll check that one out. I don't want to go there with one that I'm returning.
By the way - Anyone ordering this notebook, I can't recommend Amazon highly enough. I got the wrong laptop, and they refunded me so that I could get the correct one on Monday since there was conflicting information on their site and Toshiba's. I haven't even sent this one back yet, and it's free to send it back. That's excellent service for you. They also have an offer where you can get $3.99 next day shipping and free two day shipping for the next month. I think I'm going to keep the service, since it is so nice (it's only $79 for one year - I can easily spend that in shipping in two months).
I've moved away from shopping at Newegg for a lot of things because of their return policy on laptops, LCDs and the shipping rate for cases. I still do business with them, but not being able to return a laptop if you don't like it is too much money to risk, imho. Amazon has earned my business with this situation. -
-
Aerows - I'm anxious to see your battery results - especially with the dual-core when you receive it. I'm not happy with the battery life on my H-P dv2 - which uses a single-core Neo - so hopefully your results will be better. And a little bit off-topic - I'm glad to see that I'm not the only person frustrated with NewEgg. I've not had a problem with any of the laptops I've ordered from NewEgg - but Amazon's laptop return policy is an order of magnitude better (plus they let you edit your reviews). I guess NewEgg has gotten so big that they have forgotten how to treat customers ...
-
***JUST TO CLARIFY: when i refer to your model, i am referring to the single core neo model, in case you dont make it to this post before you receive your dual core model
Hey Aerows,
Let me first start off by saying how glad i am that i came across this. Ive been looking all over today for a review on this exact model.
I need an opinion from you please!
Ive been in the market for an 11.6 netbook for a while, and took a trip to office depot today.
I ended up buying the T115-S110, which is pretty much the older model of what you bought. Here is a link:
http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/487143/Toshiba-Satellite-T115-S1100-11-6/
I purchased the display unit since it was in perfect shape, and recived a 10% discount, so got the unit for $399.52 after tax.
I was hesitant to buy, because i was considering the newer model which you purchased, that they also had for $450 ($477 after tax), so a 77 dollar difference.
I am currently on the 1100 model as i type, and i do like it, but i am wondering your opinion on if you think the 77 dollars is worth the upgrade. I am thinking it is.
I know it is hard for you to give an opinion, as you most likely have not played with the 1100. I am aware that the 1120 is only a single core, even though it is advertised everywhere including office depot, as you mentioned, as a dual (everywhere i have looked has this misprint, this should definitely be corrected, haha!) The only real difference i see is the following:
My model: 2GB DDR3, celeron 1.3ghz, GMA4500
Your model: 2GB DDR2 (800mhz, so not really a loss there), neo 1.6ghz, HD3200
I am thinking that the 77 dollar difference is worth it for the gpu upgrade alone, as the 3200 is about twice the performance as the pitiful gma4500. I plan on using this netbook for internet of course, occasional light light games, and some on the go photoshop cs4 and web editing (i have a desktop i use for my main web and graphic design so of course the toshiba will not be used as primary, just occoasional on the fly editing).
I appologize for the long message, just really excited to be able to ask someone with first hand experience, and i am nearly positive i am wanting to upgrade tomorrow. I suppose my main questions are the following:
1. How is the perfomance of your gpu paired with the neo mv-40? (i understand you may not have had it long enough to test much, but any info is greatly appreciated). I honestly have yet to test mine. Trying to hold off installing all my software until i decide which model to stick with.
2. I am assuming this is a no-brainer, but do you think ill see much difference between the Celeron 1.3 and the Neo 1.6?
3. Users have all commented on how horrible the speakers on my model are, and let me tell you, they are the worst ive ever heard. Out of the box, you could not even here the "ding" when you click to turn volume up, even with it all the way up. No exaggeration, they sound like cheap headphones when you dont have them in your ear, but can faintly hear the sound through them when laid on the table, for example. Toshiba posted a driver update recently that "fixed" the low audio issue, but they are still flat out awful, i cant stress how bad. So i'm curious how the audio is on yours?
4. I doubt stepping back down from DDR3 to DDR2 wont show a difference, what do you think? I am seeing more conflicting info, as many sites list your model as DDR2 667mhz, but toshiba lists as 800mhz. Any confirmation on the 800mhz? If it is, i definitely shouldnt see much of a difference. Not sure why they took a step back, though, especially seeing as how ddr3 is now a bit cheaper than ddr2. Also, I too will upgrade to 4gb dual channel once i am settled on either unit.
Again, i am so so sorry for this ridiculous long reply, but i want to get the most for my money, and i have no one else to ask. Also, I am sorry for any poor grammar in here, pretty much throwing this together as thoughts flow out, haha. I might have a few more things to discuss if you dont mind, but ill spare you and let you get to these first before i talk anymore, haha.
SO excited to hear back from you!! Thank you in advance!
(ps, i do have a recent computer engineering degree, so no need to feel like you need to word responses in a way that would need to be simple enough for the average user to understand, ;-) hehe)
Thanks again,
Alex -

I got the dual-core in today, and I’m doing some testing on it. Does anyone know a good battery benchmark? I also put my dual-channel kit in it, bringing it up to 4 gbs and it seems a bit snappier now that it is running in dual channel mode. The dual-core is a bit more powerful (obviously) than the single core, so I’ll be sure and report more on the heat & battery life.
For those annoyed by the glossy screen, I got a Nushield DayView protector which cuts down on glare and makes it a bit more readable in sunlight (not a big improvement in that department). It’s not the easiest thing in the world to get on correctly, so expect to have to fuss with it to get air bubbles out, but it provides a more “matte” display. -
I hope the dual core works for you. I went to Officeworks (big office supply store in Australia) and saw the Celeron 743 model there. I didn't mind the keyboard although the glossy look was a turn off for me, and I didn't fancy the trackpad. By the way aerows, you got on liliputing
-
i ended up switching out to the single core from the older model as i was talking about in my response last night.
anyone else experience a a jumpy mouse while using the touchpad? doesnt seem as smooth of movement as it should be. my acer netbook is much much smoother. as i move the mouse using the touchpad, the pointer seems to skip or lag, just isnt smooth at all. any ideas? -
Well, i upgraded touch pad drivers by downloading the latest straight from synaptics site, still a laggy feel to the pointer while using the touchpad. checked all settings, nothing to smooth it out.
upgraded video drivers as well, to make sure that wasnt the issue, but no avail there either (it was worth a shot, and drivers needed updating anyway)
pointer moves completely smooth when using a usb mouse, so its clearly a touchpad issue. and i believe i can rule it as a hardware issue, because i am using the same touchpad driver as i have on my acer, and the acer is fine.
very annoying problem. anyone else with this model experiencing this? would like to rule it out as being my specific unit, rather than a model specific problem. any insight would be much appreciated.
other than this issue, this unit is great, and i vouch for everything aerows has posted in her review so far.
Aerows - I will help you hunt down a battery benchmark if youre still looking for one. ill run a benchmark on mine as well when we find a good one so that we can compare the single core to the dual core model. im very curious to see the results. -
been searching for over an hour to find a good battery benchmark of sorts with very little luck. ive dug pretty dang deep, and have only come up with the following, but not sure if any of these are what we are looking for. let me know if you find something and what it is so we can use the same program to test each of ours
BatteryBar
Imtec Battery
EmbBatPower
Battery Eater -
This is a little off topic, but my wife got me the Acer Ferrari One 11.6" which has the Athlon 64X2 with 4GB / 250GB HD / ATI HD3200. I can say that after using it for work, and home, it's really good processor. I have Adobe Elements installed and does a good job. Also it does a great job when using with Windows Live Movie Maker. I actually did a movie for our family Christmas get together and did it on the Acer. Battery life so far I can get a easy 5.5 hrs if I set it to "Power Saver"
-
Has anyone found a review on this laptop? I have searched quite aggressively and came up empty...
-
i'm also glad I found this review/discussion. I saw aerows' post over on netbooked.net, and then found this one. I'll probably also order the t115d-s125, and replace my hp mini 311 with it (intel atom 270+nvidia ion), and see if it plays lighter games (css/tf2) better than the hp. I could only get about 22fps on tf2 on a very low res screen, and about 3fps when actually in a multiplayer game. HD content played back fine, but the goal was a small, 11" screen for gaming while travelling.
I just ordered mine from amazon, and i'll let folks know what I find with it.
dwight. -
-
Thanks azn, ill give this a shot and post results in case anyone else is having this issue. still curious if anyone else is.
-
just uninstalled, restarted, and let windows install its generic driver as you suggested. still a bit jittery, but a little improvement. only problem is now with the generic drivers, scroll on the touchpad does not function.
-
I got the synaptic drivers, and didn't really see much of an improvement on the scrolling aspect. Double-tapping is fine, but I really need to be able to scroll. I'm going to try uninstalling and using some other drivers, too. The touchpad is the only thing I'm not thrilled about - the keyboard I've gotten used to.
If any of you are adventurous, it can be overclocked. I clocked my video card for kicks to 570 and my processor to 1615. I didn't really try pushing it because I don't really need anything more than it provides at the moment, but it made Mass Effect a lot smoother - ME is much better with the dual core processor - and I got around 1300 with 3DMark06. If you are interested in this, here is a website that includes detailed instructions for both. It's written for the Acer Ferrari One, but our chipsets are identical so it worked exactly as detailed for me. http://mini-gaming.co.cc/?p=157
I don't think I need to include the precautionary statement that you need to be careful when you do this so that you don't fry your laptop, but I'll say it anywayThe 3200 is highly overclockable, so 70 mhz was pretty much nothing for it. I went straight there and it wasn't a problem. Again though, I'm not anxious to burn it up just yet.
I tested the battery via just surfing and reading an ebook with it using the default Toshiba settings. I had the screen brightness at 50% and wifi going. I got 4.5 hours before I had to pack it up, and it still had 27% battery left. I'll try to test it again when I have more than 5 hours without interruption to really run it down (that's why I need a battery benchmark). -
Aerows,
On my single core s1120, yesterday i sat on it with constant use, 3 notches from max brightness, with constant use of web browsing, a few small web flash games, some use of notepad, a few program installations such as google chrome, aim, and a few others. Started at exactly 12:32pm, and used until 6:30pm on battery, ran it down to 11%, finally died on me. Can't be happier with 6 hours of usage!
The problem i'm experiencing with the touchpad isnt so much the scrolling, i was able to adapt to that fairly quick. Its more than lack of smooth motion of the pointer while moving from place to place along the screen. Are you seeing this?
Also, i'm going to give pcmark vantage a go for the heck of it, rather than 3dmark06, and see what results i get. Also going to push a bit on the overclock as you did (nothing that will fry it of course), and run pcmark again and see what improvement i might get. ill keep anyone following this posted. -
pcmark vantage was a no go, haha. froze up on the second test for hd playback. i did have it on a balanced power setting though, not sure how much difference that made. set it to high performance now. but going to ditch vantage and run 3dmark06 and post results before and after hd3200 overclock.
Update 1:
I restarted the t115d-s1120 and ran pcmark vantage again with power mode set to performance, and test completed successfully.
Results:
TV and Movies 835.00
Gaming 1203.00
HDD 2623.00
Update 2:
Overclocking using the method provided above in aerows' post was very finicky for me, and many other users as i found as i looked into it. i was not as lucky as aerows or other users who have had luck with this. I was able to manage a slight overclock to about 540. Didn't make too much of a difference after re-running vantage. Did, however, move my windows 7 score up from 4.5 to 4.8.
Results:
Gaming 1217.00
I have an excel file with full details if anyone is interested. -
Alex, I did a few things that may help. First, I downloaded the latest catalyst drivers for the HD3200. I set everything to performance, and set AA and AF to application controlled. The resolution on such a small screen is high enough that you really can't see a lot of jaggies.
Yes, the overclocking app is a bit flaky. Alex, did you upgrade your RAM? When I added a second chip and got dual channel my performance got a little better. Glad you have one and we can hopefully figure out how to get the touchpad a little easier to use.

I am very interested in how people view Intel vs AMD on these laptops, since they are close in price. Intel version has better life (rate 9hrs vs 6 hrs), higher models have bluetooth, DDR3 vs DDR2 on AMD and runs cooler. While AMD versions have eSata and better graphics. -
If you don't care at all about playing games and using 3D applications, the difference will be lost to you. Well, until you use the flash 10.1 update and watch youtube HD in full screen and Hulu. Does Intel's GPU accelerate those with the 10.1 update?
I don't play demanding FPS titles, but I do play MMOs (WoW and now, RoM - great game) and a lot of RPGs (Mass Effect, Fallout 3, KOTOR 1&2, DA:O, Sacred 1&2). The most demanding one is ME, and I used it as my benchmark, so to speak. The 11.6" that I own, the T115D, will play it.
Other people have different things that they want to do with their laptop than I do. For them, the Intel chip may be adequate currently, but I question the longevity of the 4500mhd. It's weak now, and won't do what I want out of the gate (play ME, and Fallout 3). It won't miraculously start doing it later. Thank goodness we have options so that we can buy what suits us. -
Cdn:
Thanks for the thought, unfortunately i did try that solution already a couple days ago with no luck. It seemed to make the slightest bit of improvement but not enough, and also it resulted in the loss of the scroll function on the touchpad.
As far as the intel vs ati, aerows is absolutely correct. I purchased the t115-s1100 model a day before i purchased this one. The s1100 has the intel gma 4500, and it was absolute crap. could barely push 720p let alone 1080p. i hooked it up to my 47' lcd via the hdmi port, and tested hd content with hulu and it was absolutely not watchable. Also as aerows stated, the 3200 will handle light gaming, the 4500 would not handle more than simple web flash based games, and would barely handle those. My windows 7 score improved from 3.1 and 3.4 in the aero and gaming categories, and although im still at 3.1 for the aero cat, i have improved to 4.5 in the gaming cat with the 3200.
Aerows,
I updated the catalyst and video drivers as soon as i pulled it out of the box. also updated sound, wireless and wired network drivers, as well as tried a few different touchpad drivers. Every driver on this unit was extremely outdated, which is just completely unacceptable for a unit that is barely pushing 2 weeks on the market. Windows update did not pick up on the outdated sound, video, or touchpad drivers. So for the normal user, they most likely would be running on all old drivers...just not right.
No updating of drivers seemed to help touchpad issues.
I have no upgraded my ram yet. I am actually on the verge on returning this to office depot and purchasing the s1125 dual core model (the red version). Toshiba direct has it for 499 with free shipping, and has the red model available.
I think for only $50, the dual core upgrade alone is worth it. What do you think aerows? -
Seriously, Alex. If you are like me, and intend to use it and enjoy it, dual core is the way to go. That is my honest opinion, my friend.
It's easy to overclock the dual core if I need more, and out of the gate it is more powerful. Those are the criteria I judge whether it is more powerful on. -
Ok ok, you have me sold! Hehe.
Office depot has an exhange only policy if the box is open, but fortunately i have a loophole. They have this single core model advertised as the dual like most other retailers, so i'll play dumb. Ill act mad as if i had no idea, and through a fit until the return it
Ill go ahead and order the dual now, and return this tomorrow.
Damn youGot me all excited now.
-
Oh no! It seems toshibadirect removed the red models off for purchase. Anyone know where the red models might still be available?
Update
Nevermind, look into it a bit more. They did have them listed under separate models when you go to:
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/laptops.to?family=Satellite&model=T115&bopt=bts#resultsMatrix
But now if you click the s1125 model, they have the option to choose your color, for anyone interested. -
Thank you Aerows! I thought I had decided on the ASUS 1201N but you and this netbook have changed my mind.
and now I have to pick a color... thanks a lot Alex -
Read a review on the T135D and they mention that it runs (very) hot. Has anybody found that with the T115? Just wondering since this will be used as a "lap"top and could also affect it's lifespan. Thanks!
-
I just got my T115D-S1125 an hour ago so I am cleaning up some of the unnecessary programs and creating the recovery DVDs. The trackpad seems to be OK, though not as smooth as my MacBook. The laptop does not seem to get too hot nor does the fan make a lot of noise. It seems quite responsive so far (compared to the NB205 it replaced) and the screen seems bright and crisp... I will post more info later
EDIT: I run wPrime 32M and got 57.54 sec and PCMark05 and got 2506 pcmarks while in the middle of downloading and surfing the net...
It got quite hot after PCMark05... -
Where can I get this laptop in Canada?
-
-
Anyone get a full charge battery life yet?
I know Aerows posted something, but it wasnt a complete drain.
Also, does anyone know where the best place to buy this is? Amazon is still at retail. -
Newegg, Amazon and Toshibadirect are all at $499.
