I'm deciding between these two. The gateway has a 8800M GTS in it and costs $100 less. My only concern is the quality of the gateway. When I looked at the Toshiba's 1440x900 screen in the store, I was very impressed. It looked much better than the 1440x900 screen on the gateway. The gateway does have a pretty nice card though. What do you guys think?

I chose the X205-SLi4 over the Gateway P-6831 (the BestBuy one for $1250) FX for a couple reasons. First, the Toshiba has 2 8600M GTs, which added together in SLi have the same number of shaders as a 8800M GTS so if the game is SLi capable you should get nearly the same or better FPS. Secondly, the Toshiba has "4.1" harman/kardon (really 2.1) speakers that sound excellent, while the Gateway probably has cheapo speakers. And, most of the features like the processor and hard drive seem better (just look at my sig) and the all-inclusive Toshiba can be had for like $2099 these days.

If you are a hard gamer go for the gateway because the 8800 is better than the 2 8600's, and you can always upgrade the CPU...
However If you're just a "casual" gamer (the sli is still very powerfull) go for the tosh... Better quality, better desing (IMHO), GREAT speakers, GREAT screen, im very happy with it... Great performance in COD4, Need for Speed ProStreet, Timeshift, Bioshock and acceptable fps in Crysis at med/high... -
You can upgrade the CPU in the Toshiba... and the 8800M GTS gets like 7800 3Dmarks, so if you OC your 8600s you can get to around 8800 GTS speed in SLi capable games.

But if you upgrade the CPU in the gateway, 8600's sli wont touch the 8800 gts performance, and that is at stock clocks, if you overclock that, even more difference will appear... Im not saying the toshiba is bad, because it isn't (i love mine) but the gateway is better in game performance...

Same situation here. The Gateway P-6831FX is very tempting due to having a 8800gts at only $1349, but I am iffy about Gateway's quality. If 2 8600M GT's in SLi equals that of a single 8800GTS, then I'd rather spend the extra money on a better quality item, and better specs overall.
So my question is, will the Toshiba X205-SLI2 perform just as well, if not better due to a better CPU, than the Gateway P-6831FX?
How well does the Toshiba X205-SLI2 play new games like CoD4, TF2? Is it somewhat future proof? -
It won't perform better than the gateway, not even with the better CPU, the best it could do is match the performance of gateway with the t5450 overclocking the 8600's (if you upgrade the cpu in the gateway, bye bye sli's) .. The sli isn't bad, i have it and i like it, COD4 runs perfect, also Bioshock, and any game except crysis... But i can see this tosh having problems (running just at medium) with games in the next 6 months (assasin's creed, farcry 2, etc)... The gateway is more future proff with no doubt... I dont know abt the quality, but in performance the gateway is better...
In fact, if the price is not a dealkiller for you, since you're considering the sli why dont you buy the gateway P-171X FX... is 1999 and it has the t8300, 3gb of ram and the 8800 GTS... -
I am running two 8800GTS in SLi mode on my desktop. To be honest, the performance is sub par when maxing games out. That's because I run at 2560x1600 though.
I could go for the P-171X FX. I wanted to keep it under $2,000 but I don't think I'm ready to buy a laptop that good just yet, not ready for a full desktop replacement. I just want a nice gaming laptop to hook up to my 61" DLP TV and to bring to my girlfriends and work. -
Hi guys, I just wanted to drop in say that I think you all have valid points. I also thought long and hard about what I wanted and ended up choosing the Gateway P-6831. As for the quality, I think it's a very well built machine. The reason I went for the Gateway was because I was on a budget and wanted a really good video card to play the latest video games.
