Considering a 17" desktop replacement and saw this at Costco.....decent price considering the free 2 year warranty from Costco.

Anyway, the only thing that I do not like about this laptop is the weak CPU. Does anyone know if thats upgradable to the newer Penryns? Like a T8300 or T9300?

Also will that void the warranty on it? Any feedback from current owners on how the laptop holds out for everyday usage, light gaming ,etc?

    Appreciated

Looking it up... It looks like it has the T5500 1.83 ghz processor... problem is this is a Socket M processor, whereas the penryn are Socket P, so no i would say this is not upgradeable...

Well it has the PM965 chipset which many penryn notebooks use so it *might* work, they just used a slower chip to save money in production. But I would ask around a little more to be sure

Bummer is all I can say.....my option was the Gateway P series from Bestbuy but the brand Gateway brings back some old bad memories!

    Thanks for the responses though

Yes you can upgrade the cpu to T9300 The X205 series use the same motherboard for S9800 S3949 or even the SLI 1-4 .
Go to Toshiba website and download the new Bios in the info what's been updated you will see that it supports the new CPU.

    Good luck .
    I just ordered a T9300 for my X205 S3949.

*whistles casually* cpu-z reports the processor as being a socket p merom t5550 1.83ghz processor. definitely upgradeable to the 9300. i'm just waiting for the price to drop a little bit.

is anyone else having a problem downloading the pdf file? every time i try it shows up as a corrupt file...someone email it to me please. PM me and ill PM you back with my email

I almost got the T7700 but the price hasn't droped yet .
T7700 cost $326 and the T9300 $340 so who knows how long we have to wait till the price drop ! ?
Anyway the next generation CPU won't be Socket P so this will be the last upgrade for that Laptop....

It's a good upgrade, I've been happy with the T9300... had one in mine for a couple months... just take your time on the dissasembly and putting it back together, only real tricky part is getting the motherboard and GPU's out of the bottom case and back in... pain in the butt ha... doable, but I sure don't really wanna do it again... RAM's a piece of cake, you'll see a bit of improvment, not sure what OS you are running, but mine uses 3GB of it... also, you won't get the 800mhz increase, it'll still run at 667.

Overall though a nice upgrade package, just completely voids the warranty and isn't for the faint of heart :)

The memory bus only runs at 667Mhz so even if you put in 800Mhz memory it will downclock to 667Mhz so I would stick with 667Mhz memory.

    I got the Upgrade today.
I changed the memory first to OCZ DDR800 MHZ and I haven't seen any improvements according Vista . I know it will down clock the mem to 667 but i was hoping there is a way to change the Cas Lat to 4-5-5 instead of 5-5-5 .
Anyway after i make sure the mem is working i started to take the computer apart to change the Cpu to T9300 . It took a while to do it but I did it and it's up and running .
My vista went thru a lot including changing video drivers etc.... but it seems that I got about 300 point increase according to 3Dmark06.
everything stock i got 5237 point and with the cpu and mem change my vista rating jumped up cpu/mem used to be 4.8 /4.8 now it's 5.4 Cpu /5.1 for the memory .... . I got a new hard drive as well 7200rpm i will swap the drive and install Xp / Vista and see what is there is any difference between vista and XP ......

Nice thread! I was curious to see what I could thrown in my x205-S9800, I might have to go get the 4GB of RAM first before th CPU.

I'm still looking for an upgrade to a 8800GT for my Toshiba x200. I like the 8700, but it's a bit to slow for what I want to do with it. Anybody knows if this is upgradable too?

    Easy answer?

    No.

    Complete answer?

Theoretically it could be possible as the GPU is on a separate card but Toshiba made it proprietary and thus unless they manufactured the x300/x305 series similarly or a card for the x200/x205 then it probably isn't going to happen. So its still not likely.
