hey nice job with the pics :)

yeah it does look like the CPU and GPU can be upgraded. I think Toshiba has that in mind for the people who like to upgrade (namely a lot of us). Also due to the size of the case as well.

Thanks, i could figure out how to put them in order though on photobucket.
Hopefully this is a catalyst for people who want to upgrade their CPU to something better...and also if you like my work, please dont forget the rep.

I wonder if the BIOS will accept new other cpus or other GPU without an update.

Or of the fans and heatsinks are enough for such upgrades.

Nice work with the pictures, would love some more explanation under each one and sorting if possible.

    :)

That's a very thorough disassembly. How long did it take?

And damn it, that red still looks terrible to me.

    Sorry. :D

    PS: you're still in fatigues.

The disassembly, took all of about fifteen mintues, this time, which is the second time. The first time took no more than 23 minutes. I was able to do this on my lunch break.

That's pretty impressive. Do you have a lot of experience with disassembly?

I'm asking as I'm not sure if that amount of time will be considered normal.

Well as most people are aware of, even a run of the mill infantryman, has loads of experience, assembling and disassembling all types of weapon systems, both great and small. We are perfectionists when it comes to weapons maintenance and punctuality. Now apply that very honed skill to disassembling other complex things, and I guess it just makes me more adept...To answer your question though, no I dont have ALOT of experience disassembling laptops or notebooks, just weapons, and desktops.

CQ, I have a question, what is the MP on the webcam and does it move at all?
2nd question, looking at BB website I notice they only offer Vista Home Prem 64bit, you have Vista Ultimate did u install yourself or was that something offered in BB?
anything you can tell me is greatly appreciated. I'm finally going to take the plunge and buy a laptop instead or getting hand me downs and stuff. This laptop looks like the one.

alright first off great job with the step by step, second has anyone tried upgrading the cpu yet was curious because toshiba only has one bios update as of today and it says nothing about cpu compatabilty and i just had my wife pick this up for me so that when i get home on block leave i have it waiting for me, and last but not least, it's just awsome to see not only a fellow service member that's also a fellow tech, but even more so a grunt, so from one grunt to another(different service) Ooorah thanks again for this post i was already excited about this laptop now i just can't waite to get home and mess with this thing.

No the warranty should still apply. If the laptop was taken apart and put back carefully with the same stock parts, there is no way that Toshiba will be able to tell. There are no seals that are broken, etc. I hope this helps. God Bless :)

ok well i want to upgrade my x300, purchased from bestbuy canada.

i saw it mentioned but not answered earlier, if we upgrade the processor, will it work? will it get too hot? and someone said something about thie bios, will that need to have something done to it?

in going to bring this to a computer shop, ive been going there for years and im going to get him to install it, but im just wondering because i would think he has no experience with this laptop.

    thanks

Why do you want to upgrade it though? It really is fast enough for every mainstream game (and therefore can handle just about any other task well enough) at the moment and should be for a good while. Additionally, as the higher spec model isn't available yet it is likely you will be waiting for a while.

Why not just go down the overclocking route instead?

well there will be a performance difference, as i was doing some downloading, installing and playing music, the processor was overloaded, making it somewhat lag. also, the ram is always at 50% or more even at idol. anyone know why?

also, i might overclock it, but i dont know how and doesnt that decrease the life of the processor in the long run?

Can anyone who disassembled this find out what type of Bluetooth module is being used?

I'm very close to pulling the trigger on buying a Qosmio F55-Q502 but it has no Bluetooth. I'm thinking if the X305 and the F55 share the same BT module, there might be a chance to upgrade.

i was just thinking, since the other toshiba model with a 2.53 processor and a 9800M GTX can handle that, isint this one the exact same chasis, just with different components, so wouldnt that make it work perfectly if we change the processor and video card?

No offense, but that really doesn't answer my question in the least. It's not like Toshiba only makes one Bluetooth chip and puts it on only one Bluetooth module.

This would make this the perfect gaming system BECAUSE it's on sale right now for 999.

I would so pop in a x9100 + 9800GTX and watch it fly. BUT IS THIS POSSIBLE? GPU UPgrade ? I know the x9100 is a drop in replacement but what about the GPU?

If you can get your hands on a 9800M GTX made by Toshiba it *should* fit in there. If you find one, let me know as I would like to put one in my Qosmio F55. I already have the Intel Extreme X9100 installed :D . God Bless :)

Dont quote me on the webcam specs, but I think it's 2.0 MP. Second, the Ultimate X64 edition, I had to buy seperate. The OEM version of Windows Vista Home Premium, originally on this lappy, gives you the X86 or X64 edition choice upon first use.

The port that the GPU connects to, is a proprietary PCI Express X16 Generation 2.0 modular graphics port, manufactured by Toshiba Semiconductors.

Nope, no secondary. This is where research and some elbow grease come into play. I found an old video card (ATI Radeon) that has the same voltage and wire number as the fan inside the case. So from there I spliced it to the primary fan, and created a base sheet to bond the secondary fan to, so that it doesnt make contact with the schematics. I am looking into using one of the aftermarket PCI Express cooling cards(for desktop), for a better option, or more efficient.

At the moment, because there is not an enclosure around the secondary fan, like the primary, it's more proof of concept. However the case temps dropped7 degrees farenheit. I'll update you when I finish it.

So how much did u pay for the new Processor? i looked it up and the lowest was $539!! that's a lot of money.. btw, did you manage to remove the transparent red cover above the keyboard? I really want to clean that from time to time... Thanks to you, I'll probably upgrade by next summer, hoping to see a price drop on the processor first =P
