How do you know it's using battery while plugged in? Is the LED not lit on the notebook or is it showing this in XP's System Tray (bottom right corner)? If the light is just not one, it's possible it just may not light up when fully charged, but if it's showing under XP, it's possible there's a little hick-up in the OS in detecting when on AC & battery. If the system is actually using battery and not charging, the battery should die in a few hours, if not, than that means the battery is charging & you're running off AC, not battery.
