I recently acquired a Toshiba A215-5808 a month ago and I uninstalled all the bloatware when I first got it so I could get it down to the bare essentials.

I looked on Toshiba's website and here's the only downloads that were related to the DVD-RW drive:

    1) Toshiba Disc Creator for Windows Vista/XP (v2.0.0.8; 06-04-2007; 8.62M)
    2) Toshiba DVD Player for Windows Vista (v1.10.08; 09-28-2007; 23.05M)
    3) CD/DVD Drive Acoustic Silencer for Windows Vista (v2.01.03; 09-18-2007; 3.19M)

Is the Toshiba Disc Creator for burning any CD-R's and DVD-R's or just for burning recovery discs? I was going to re-install it, but I read it was only for creating recovery discs and I already have some recovery discs that came with my A215 so I don't need those.

So, am I stuck with using Vista's built-in burning support unless I get some 3rd party software like Nero?

There are also free disc authoring software on the internet. You just have to look for it. Their functions might be limited, but they should be good enough if that is all that you want to do.

Another option is to buy these softwares through amazon.com. Usually there are older versions that are cheap enough, but is sufficient.

You should have some kind of burning software that came with your notebook. Sonic came with mine. There are also free ones to be had. Try google.

The disc creator is software for burning data and music cd's. It also let's you burn images and isos.

Its one of the few pieces of Toshiba software that I actually use. Roxio and Nero are way over kill and the Toshiba is a solid and stable free burning app. I recommend it.
