Basically, whenever I turn my laptop on I can hear the laptop starting up for about 3-5 seconds before it shuts down, and the screen doesn't even come up. I've tried this with the charger plugged in and without the charger, but the same thing happens each time. I read online that it might be something to do with overheating, but the laptop doesn't even come on and I've left it for over 2 hours where the vents aren't blocked off etc. but nothing changes.

    Thanks for any responses,
    Haz.

It's not overheating! I would guess that have an issue with the power supply to the notebook. Simply plugging it in doesn't resolve a fault in the systems core components. The fact that you don't even see a POST (Power On Self Test) is a good clue. I would take it to someone who might be able to test the power unit on the system.

The power does actually come on and the green light appears, you can hear it booting up and then it just goes off.

Sorry if that's just proving your point, just wanted to add to what I'd already put.

Not trying to speak for bgpiper, but I think his point is that the POST is finding a problem among the core components and that's why you're not making it to desktop. Are you comfortable opening the chassis to get a better look at what's going on?

You could also try the old pull battery/power then hold powerbutton in for 30 seconds. Then replace battery/ power and try again.

If that fails another easy thing is to pull and reseat both your RAM sims. That failing, suggest you get help, Toshiba may have a flat rate. You may get lucky if you pull the laptop apart and reseat but agree the board probably shut down to a power on fault. If you have kids, check all your USB ports for damage.

KettleFace I had the same issue with a desktop computer at my office. It would power on, turn off a few seconds later before displaying anything on my screen. Holliday777 probably did a better job than I explaining the POST. Obviously the first component is Power, so if there is an issue there nothing else will work. In the case of my desktop, I simply swapped out the power supply unit and all was well again. Not so easy to do with a notebook.
