I have a problem with a toshiba laptop, where is coming back with errors or is taking too long to open any application, I believe the problem may be a bad hard drive. I run the chkdsk / R trying to recover some files but the problem is when was running stage #3 the system made a really weird noise ( as if the hardrive was going to give out)... that lasted for a 10 seconds and then ran through stage #3 with no problems. The problem started on stage 4. the system seems to be stuck at 62%... I left the system running all night and came back displaying the same number (62%, has been stuck on that same number for the past 10 hours). The 2 questions that I have... should I reboot re run chkdsk /f to fix the cluster(s) and forget the data. or Can I assume this HD is pretty much gone and get a new one?

    thank you in advance

Your hard drive sounds like it's on its way out.

I just gave this advice to someone earlier I suggest you do the same. The diagnostic utilities will run outside of Windows, so should give an indication if the problem is Windows related or a bad drive.

When you get a new drive you can always pull the data off the old drive hooking it up externally.

Hopefully there isn't a lot of data you want in the bad sectors.
