    Hello,
I'm sorry to bring up OLD computers... but I must say, after owning several laptops, the Portege r200 (Or the Portege 2000 / r100) has the BEST chasiss.

I mean, who REALLY needs an optical drive integrated? Only for installing software / watching movies, right? Most of the time, when i'm on the run, the optical drive just adds to weight and size.

So the Portege r200 is idea! However, it is dreadfully slow / outdated. Was hoping to upgrade it.

Is it possible to switch the 4200 1.8" HD for a 1.8" SSD?

    What about the memory? Upgradable?

For that matter, what about the CPU? I mean, i know it can be switched to a 1.3 ghz... (R205 ver.), but anything better?

What about switching the screen out for an LED?

Money is NOT an issue. Would do anything to use the r200 chasis.

Looking at that model it appears the hardrive uses the EIDE interface and SSDs only use SATA as far as i know, so they wont work.
the memory is upgradable to 1280MB,
Not sure about the processor but i would say it should be upgradable depending on whether the BIOS supports the newer processors.

Mtron makes a 1.8" PATA SSD which I transplanted into my Fujitsu P7120 here:
    http://www.leog.net/fujp_forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12809

The difference in speed is astounding! It has breathed new life into my laptop.

A friend asked me if I could do it to her R200 - I'll let you guys know if it works out.

Just a quick update - the Mtron 32GB 3018 SSD works great in the Portege R200. Nice and speedy!
