Anyone has any issue or it fixes anything with this new released bios 2.80? It claims to be fixing the cougar point bug.

-
Wow, noone interested in the new bios version 2.80 for toshiba laptops, especially the r835-p56x.
-
I upgraded shortly after getting the computer and have had no problems that I can tell. I mainly do light work and web access - no heavy multimedia or games. I don't know what the "cougar point bug" is.
-
Thanks for the feedback. I didn't think it would cause any problem. if your laptop is turned off, do you have any issue with the battery draining?
Basically, the cougar point is a bug that was detected by Intel with the HM56 chipset or intel 6 series family, where the voltage could shorten the life of your motherboard. -
tishatossie, I replied to your other post regarding battery drain, I looked at mine and I don't see any drain from one night to the next morning. Can you tell me how exactly you are seeing the 10% drop?
As far as the Cougar Point, rest assured for the Intel flaw affecting early Sandy Bridges, the R835s in the USA are not affected. This was confirmed by Toshiba on their forum as well as a link from that forum posting. The firmware is for Cougar Point, which is just the code name of the chipset, the flaw that caused temporary ceased shipment and sales, as far as I recall, was something that needed a replacement, not a firmware upgradable fix. -
I updated a while back and noticed no difference.
-
Ryoko,
I was looking at it closely with another new battery and there was no difference. Once the laptop was shut down, the battery is losing charge consistently about 1% per hour. I really don't know what else to do and Toshiba support is very very poor. The Toshiba support people all they can do were asking you for the model, serial number, creating the case number, they kept asking you to explain the problem again and again, they acted like they mis-understood the problem, so I did all the talking and after all they can't even suggest anything. They dont even know where to start or what to tell you. I have learnt every option in the bios and nothing has helped. It is either there is a bug in the bios, or something in the bios that I've missed, or there is a hardware flaw with my laptop. There is nothing to do with windows as I am shutting it down completely, no sleeping or hypernation. Sleep and Charge was the first thing I was hoping it would fix the problem if it was disabled, but that didn't help.
What is drawing the power when the laptop was shutdown? -
How are you checking the battery life? Is it by hovering over the battery icon on the lower right to see time and % left? I will look at mine overnight.
-
That is right. I check the battery life by hoovering the mouse over the battery icon on the lower right.

When I go to the R835-P56x Toshiba download site & show my operating system as being Win7 64bit the bios update does not appear so I did not update jimjoh
-
That's the problem with entirely new models, there are initial problems. Though, I am glad Toshiba is addressing them.
Keep us posted. I may grab a portege when I head off to grad school to supplement my Qosmio; as long as the reviews and comments stay positive.
Good luck -
Does the BIOS update work on Windows 7 64bit?
-
yes, the update works fine in windows 7, 64-bit
-
Model Content Page -
I also upgraded my firmware to 3.0, works fine within Windows 7 64bit, in fact I chose the "upgrade from within Windows" option.
-
Bios version 3.0 did not fix the battery losing power. I guess I will have to help Toshiba to debug this problem as they can't help me.
-
tishatossie, I thought you had sent in the notebook for Toshiba?
-
No, not yet. I still don't believe it has anything wrong with the laptop. I highly believe it is bios bugs. I don't want to receive a refurbished laptop back and still have the same problem.
-
I don't know if this helps on the excessive power loss when shut down but I seem to remember that the computer can be used as a wifi hotspot (I hope I understood this correctly) - is it possible that this feature is "on" on your computer and stays on after shutdown?
My own experience indicates that after 12hrs of complete shutdown, power is indicated at 100 to 99% thru the first 10 min after booting.
Also, you indicated a believe that the problem could be bios related - would an upgrade (3.0) help or were you referring to a hardware issue with the chip?
And finally, have you tried removing the battery for 24hrs and then seeing how much power has been lost? This might eliminate the battery as the problem.
It is not my intent to "hijack" the thread so move as appropriate. -
Default Re: Just got the new R835-P50X
any one else notice after this firmware update it seems the cpu is throttled down untill you call for it and then it takes forever to "spin Up" as it where..
i saw a imedite temp drop but i think there something funny there to. showed a lower temp than should...IMPO
also it does seem laggy at times now like it is doing a poor job at throttling without lag. -
battery meter takes a long time to be accurate. iE in the begining it is Fuped
its lion so it doesnt drain unless bad cells.. Lion can hold charge for 10 years. (if proper charge IE long store charge IE 80% not 100 as at 100 it is allot of stress in lamens for the cell to store. if i make sense
