Just found this on another forum with laptop reliability rates from their manufacturers, puts the failure rate of Toshiba laptops inside 3 years at just over 15%. Which is 10% less than the worst; HP at over 25%.

The only people touting a higher reliability rate than Toshiba is Asus scraping ahead by 0.1% (not Acer who came in about 23% [I mention because I almost made this mistake]). So well done Toshiba!

Toshiba reliability went through a bad patch a few years back which caused them to give more attention to quality.

However, any reliability data for the past 3 years really needs to have the nVidia GPU failures filtered out. The overall reported reliability of those brands which used many of the defective GPUs may be suffering while those which used few of the GPUs appear to be good.

Hehe, I went into a shop today to have a look at what they had in stock, and I was asking the sales rep about different laptops, he highly recommended the Qosmio's...he kind of wanted to steer me away from the HP's. :D

That "study" has been debunked countless times here. The sample selection is limited and the company behind the study has a blatant conflict of interest.

Most laptops these days can last around three years and after that it's a total crap shoot. Either way in 3 years time most laptop owners have usually bought another one either because of a new OS, speed, features, price etc. So if my laptop dies in 2-3 years it just gives me an excuse to buy something else. :)

I have a Dell Vostro 1500 (going on 2 years) that gets used everyday and other than having to replace the thermal paste it works just fine. Most laptops on average will last a few years if it hasn't been over clocked for gaming etc. But as laptops become more popular, bigger and faster and users replace their desktops with these then the numbers will change.

Because with faster CPU's and GPU's these cramped systems will put out more heat which has an affect on the rest of the parts inside. For serious gaming I still use a desktop. For really light gaming and everything else I use a laptop.

And you know why it died? Most likely because of the 8600M GT's in your notebook. All notebooks with the 8600M/8400M are more likely to fail than other notebooks, because of the design flaw.

    That's not Toshiba's fault.

The biggest area of problems I have come across over the years with Toshiba laptops have almost always been power related ... usually relating to the power connector on the laptop proper that the plug is inserted in.

Even so, a Pentium 4 Toshiba (a 1905-S303) I bought way back in Dec 2002 (I think it was then - maybe Jan 2003) ... has been working strong for 7 years now. After 2 years and 11 months the motherboard fried, but it was replaced by Toshiba literally in 2 days in an act of tech support performance that has been the best I have ever received from a warranty service.

That being said I tend to be lucky with tech support/warranty services in general ... the only bad experience I ever had was with Winbook.

So - the 1905-S303 and Toshiba's warranty service have been very reliable indeed, and even if I myself do not use the machine any more the one who is using it is still quite satisfied with the machine (he is using it for university studies).

I currently own the T115-S1100 and am very satisfied with it, although it has only been 5 months or so.

I have had a good (although admittedly limited) experience with Toshiba in terms of reliability thus far....

I've been away from Toshiba for a while. I return now because my pseudo Sager (Compal based NP2092) was behaving in an annoying manner plus I found it had no sound chip in it and that ticked me off big time. Anything that's not Clevo based isn't a Sager in my view. Anyway, years ago i had a Tosh Satellite, roughed little thing. I even dropped it once and chipped a corner on the lid. thing still worked. When I went sony VAIO at the time, I have the Tosh to my daughter, that was I think in 2001. She says it still functions.

I just replaced the pseudo sager with a Tecra A11-S3540. First thing is I notice the lid is not as rugged as the old Tosh's. But so far, can't complain about the performance. Specs in a nutshell are: 2.66 i7 CPU, 500GB HD(7200RPM), 4GB RAM (plan to up that to either 6GB or 8GB this summer).

It remains to be seen if my pre-Sager experience with Tosh is as good as my old experience which was good. I dressed it up with a SkinIt cover of my own design. http://www.skinit.com/index.php?aff...n=Skinit.com&gclid=CLHyguX4_qACFRdZbAodox7luQ

I then took a Gillette razor and carved the center out so the spiffy Toshiba lettering was visible. Maybe not the fanciest self-installed skin but I like it.

And what the GPU model in that? My bets on the 8600M GT, 8600M GS, 8400M GT, or 8400M GS.

I personally have had alot of trouble with toshiba's in the past and have had to repair alot and I mean alot of them. now I do see other brands but the peskiest and often most costly to repair have been the toshiba. Best one I have ever owned and still own and use to this day is a my portege 3505. that notebook was ahead of its time.
