1st of all, hello from a newbie. I hope no one minds me getting stuck right in.

I've been given a Toshiba Satellite 1405-s171 laptop which doesn't work. When power supply is connected, the power light very briefly illuminates green, then blinks orange. I have no instruction book so don't know what this means. The PC doesn't react at all when power button is operated.

I've been told that when the machine died the battery stopped charging but the PC operated correctly until the battery fully discharged.

Tried the obvious like a new PSU with same symptoms. Just pulled it apart to look if there is anything obvious, but can't see anything amiss.

Does anyone here have any suggestions, other than chucking it in the bin?

Should this laptop operate without the battery when connected to the external supply?

    Thanks.

    Welcome ,

I have 1410 so I'll try to help , its was a great laptop for its time , the celeron was powerful enough and quite cool .

You CAN power it up without a battery and the full manual is downloadable from toshiba website .

    according to the manual :

If the DC IN light blinks orange it means power failure or abnormal voltage , it should be green all the time when corded . It also could mean high cpu temp so the laptop won't power .

If the POWER light blinks orange it means computer turned off in standby mode , it happens when there is no power and the battery is out then the notebooks goe automaticly to hibernation mode .
