Hey everyone, i appreciate your time and respect your answers, i am wondering a few things; i am picking up my Toshiba x205 sli1 tomorrow and i either will be doing a clean install or keeping the factory install. I work at circuit city and the firedog guys said they would perform the PC SETUP procedure where they remove all the unneeded bloatware and 'optimize the operating system' they do this with a certain program stored on a jump drive. They would do this for free. If i did a clean install i would download and install all the drivers myself, but the only issue/problem i am afraid of running into is if i do it myself then losing certain functions of the touchpad and extra keyboard buttons (i.e. the volume and scrolling buttons on the touchpad, the lighting up of the touchpad, the volume and quick media buttons on the keyboard). Also would the clean install performance be huge over the factory installation. If anyone has done this how was your aftermath experience, and i would appreciate any input/advice. thanks.

I've done a clean install and a factory install before on my old laptop. I wouldn't say there was any performance difference between the two but compared to a well-used copy of windows there is a significant performance and stability increase. I've just factory installed my sr1965AN desktop and its running beautifully compared to previously. The extra buttons should have their drivers available from the Toshiba website but if you're worried, check first! As to the optimization program, i cant help you there.

    Good Luck

I did a clean install on my 9349 brfore going to XP and as long as you download all the drivers you will not be missing anything at all, even the HD DVD player software can be downloaded. If you are staying with Vista I highly recommend a clean install versus trying to remove all the bloatware, I tried this and ended up doing a clean install anyway.

    Good Luck!!

I uninstalled the bloatware and it runs great...better than the S9539! Clean install should only be used as a last resort, unless you got some time to kill. I think my S9539 is a good candidate for a clean install though...why? Maybe Vista Ultimate has too many features and is slowing me down...

So the SLI 3 might have the same problem as well too?

Not sure, when I get back home, I'll install a fresh copy of Vista Premium on the S9359 and see what happens. SLI1 runs great though, I'm leaving that one alone.

Ft Polk! Sucks to be you! LOL. I was there from 1986 to 1989....mos 67Y. I heard it has changed alot since then(mostly training now).

For me its about +300 3dmarks06 in clean install comparing to factory one.
Factory install is full of bloatware, and also who knows what else they've "tweaked" here.

Is not that bad now if you are marry, single it depends if you are lazy and don't find nothing to do it doesn't matter where are you it will sucks for you. Me I have my kids and wife so We always find something to do. Dam man that was a long time ago, I'm 92 S and my only complaint is hot as hell on the summer nasty humid. And yeah it change a lot it has a new housing, mini mall, new barracks and more. Training like crazy, for everything is training so you can imagine. By the time I be back home in as few weeks it will be more new stuff. Take care.

Do you think the Sli-1 will be better decision than the Sli-3.

I think so, but that's just my opinion... I'd rather get the SLi1 now, enjoy it, and then use the extra $$$ to throw in a bigger 7200rpm hard drive or two, and upgrade the CPU when something better comes along next year... plus, I prefer the 1440x900 screen on it versus the slightly higher res of the SLi3, and it's always gonna be a better native resolution for getting better FPS out of the newer games. So, for my $$$ the SLi1 was the better deal, but, if ya never want to consider upgrading anything, might as well get the SLi3.

As for the original question, what's up man, glad ya decided to get one! I had better luck doing a clean install, never could get the Toshiba stuff setup in Vista with all it's junk how I wanted.... you can get all the drivers off of the Toshiba website, and choose exactly which drivers you want. But, I just like messing with this stuff and tweaking and getting everything exactly like I want it, so I might be a bit overkill. Does run noticable quicker though with a clean install and only install programs you actually will use. I'd say if ya know how to do a clean install and have done it before, then go that route, otherwise just have fun with the setup as it is and enjoy. Good luck though!

If you don't mind spending some time getting everything setup, and get everything you don't want to lose (documents, videos, music, etc) backed up, you won't hurt anything... even if you totally screw up and can't get anything loaded right, worst case is you'll have to just pop back in the Toshiba recovery CD, and you'll be back to out of the box status. So, if you're like me and half the fun is messing around and getting things running better and tweaked how you want it, then yeah, definately do a clean install and go from there. Search around and find some info and exactly what you'll need to before you start, and then download some basic's from Toshiba like networking drivers, etc., and go from there. There are a few good guides on clean Vista installs and activation, more so than I've mentioned here and will walk you step by step through. Defnitately the way to go though if you don't mind putting a little time in to it.
