Hello everyone. Currently I'm deployed to Iraq so I don't have the resources to take apart my computer completely. I have a 1.66ghz Core 2 Duo processor (Intel T5500) in my U205-5057. I know that there were other models of this machine with the same chipset (945GM) that had faster processors.

I had some memory (4 GB) and a small screwdriver set coming, but I think it got lost in the mail.

All I want to know is if the processor is upgradeable and will it accept the new Penryn processors.

If anyone could help me out that would be great. I have no problem opening the laptop up. I've opened up a lot of them and replaced everything up to the backlight on an LCD.

I doubt the upgrade to Penryn offers you much. Upgrading to a faster hard drive will offer a bigger performance increase and is much easier to do the CPU.

Also unless you are running 64 bit Windows, your machine will not see all 4GB of memory.

If anyone could please answer the original question please do. I need to know if it's permenantly attached to the motherboard or not (FCPGA vs FCBGA).

I already planned to upgrade to the Hitachi Travelstar 7.2k RPM drive taking advantage of Best Buy's deal which has been published in fatwallet.com and slickdeals.net. Does the laptop support ATA 300 drives?

I know that Windows Premium will not see the entire 4 GB. As much as I do know, I don't know how to cut a 2 GB stick in half and sell the rest on eBay. Fry had a huge mail in rebate on 2 x 2 GB memory sticks. In one package. I only have 1 GB right now (2 x 512mb). So it's either 2.5 or 3 GB. I was going for 3.

Though I don't know for sure, I doubt it is soldered to the board.

I sure hope not. I *think* the 945GM chipset can support it.

If I didn't do a lot of work with Photoshop I wouldn't care. You're right about the other upgrades, and I should see how those work for me. Still want more speed though :).

Running CS3 on my Sempron desktop. It seems to do OK.

I have to process lots of NEF (Nikon RAW) files. I don't have Lightroom either.

Sorry, your chipset won't support the Santa Rosa/Penryn processors, those use the 965 chipset.

Looks like you're right and the chipset won't support the 800Mhz FSB. It will only support 667Mhz.

Now I believe the fastest processo I can use is the Core 2 Duo T7600 @ 2.33 Ghz. Thanks!
