I just recently purchased a Toshiba Satellite u305 and after removing a good part of the crap bloatware it had preinstalled, I am still missing a whopping 40 some odd gigs of space. I cannot seem to locate what is taking this space up, and I have used drive visualization tools such as Sequoia View and still cannot locate the files taking up this space. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, if anyone knows if there is a way to purchase a black replacement keyboard for this model, that would be great.

I have taken that into consideration, but I checked partitions in the Computer Management Util, and its only 1.48GB, and Vista alone cannot take up 39GB.

Tecra M8 seems to be same model as U300/U305 but with black keyboard.

In regards to space lost, I believe that it is probably a restore partition hidden away on the HD. There is no way possible that Vista is taking up 39-40GB of HD space. I would recommend a system restore if at all possible.

The thing is that this space is taken up right from install of the system. It isnt a clean install, which i may do anyway because toshiba restore is full of crap software.

Hit start, type "Disk Cleanup" without the quotations and hit enter. Select your drive in which Vista is stored on. Now see if there's anything you can erase here to free up space. If there isnt much hit the More Options tab and hit the "Clean up..." button for your System Restore points and Vista Shadowcopies if you do not care about them. For me it turned out Vista was eating up like 20 GB of space because it kept on making restore points everyday and shadowcopies of my files. You'll be surprised how much space this frees up. You should give it a try.

dude, i would suggest you a right thing to do. i had this same ****. im sure u wud've tried to restore ur windows vista using those backup cd's and messed up with the partitioning.

anyways, to see your partition space n stuff, jus right click on my computer, go to manage, then storage and open disk management. then u get to see the space that has been occupied.

alright, now ive got a problem with the same laptop. i own a toshiba u305 s5077 and downgraded to windows xp sp2. and later on, i tried to install display, audio, touchpad drivers. but none of these worked. i tried all **** suggested in toshiba website and even apart from that. please suggest me some drivers.

Turn off system restore. it takes up to 15% of your hdd space. So yea 40gb can be used for it. iv got a 200gb hdd and i think system restore took 35gb.

madonion is right, the system restore is taking about 15% or about 20GB out of your HD. You can either disable it or resize the amount of space that system restore can take. I used the steps provided in the following link to resize the amount of space taken:
