I've got a Toshiba Tecra M7 and bought the Panasonic UJ-85J slim DVD burner from Meritline. The Tecra won't recognize this burner at all.

Apparently the "cable select" setting in the drive firmware causes a conflict with the hard drive. Result: dead drive. I didn't know about the cable select issue and Meritline didn't mention it.

So I need to either find firmware and a flash utility or get another drive.

A new burner would have to either be Toshiba compatible out of the box or come from a company that provides easily obtainable firmware and flash utility to handle re-setting the cable select to Toshiba tastes (low, I believe).

Know any good ones? Dual layer would be nice.

Or ... any leads on how to get firmware/flash for the UJ-85J?

    Thanks, John

(The Panasonic site does not show any (searched for UJ-85J and generally looked around -- only the brave need try) and calls to support revealed serious support personnel confusion and no firmware to date. )
