I have an old A105-S101 and have been happy with it but there is a problem. NONE of the USB ports recognize any device plugged into them. They used to work, but no they don't and I have no idea why. The hardware manager shows that they are working properly but they do not work. What driver should I have installed for them to work right???

No matter what I try and which port I try I get the same message "USB Device Not Recognized". Flash Drives, Blackberry, Garmin GPS, iPod, etc.

I am using XP home edition.

    Thanks for any help.

Try going to control panel, administrative tools, then computer management. The select device manager and check to see if the ports are enabled

Have you tried reinstalling the driver? If I get that error it is usually because I wired the front USB ports on my desktop wrong (data pins accidentally reversed). If reinstalling the Intel chipset drivers doesn't work, then either it is XP or the USB controller is dead or one of the ports is shorted out. How old is this laptop?

I think it is a hardware issue.

I think it's more of a hardware issue.

Sorry to bump this up, but I'm having the exact same problem with my brother's computer (which I'm rebuilding for him). It turns out it's been doing this ever since he purchased the machine so, if it is a hardware problem, it's a manufacturing defect of some kind.

Still, I hold out hope that this is hardware related. The USB ports register that something is in them, they just fail to recognize what. Any help solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

    PROBLEM SOLVED

In case anybody else is still having this difficulty, here's the solution: you need to get Toshiba's BIOS update. They've released several, and for some reason these aren't listed with the rest of the laptop software downloads; you have to search for them independently. I downloaded and installed the most recent and the problem was solved. After rebooting the laptop recognizes USB devices as any other machine would.

    I hope that helps.

    Thank you for this information.

I would have not thought of suggesting the BIOS as the cause of the problem.
