Well, I'm back! And I have recently bought a GTX 770M MXM 3.0B to upgrade my X775 toshiba qosmio.

It does fit, but when I tried to boot it up, I hadn't finished putting the laptop back together and it didn't want to boot. SoI panicked and swapped back to the GTX 560M and reassembled it and it is fine again.......So before I go chasing my tail, I want to ask - what are the things that could possibly go wrong with this upgrade?

And what are my warning signs here? Will my laptop not boot at all? Or will it just have a high potential to crash? I heard that toshibas don't play well without proprietary GPUs but I don't see why it wouldn't hurt to at least try to get it to work.

I have never done this myself, but from the bits and pieces I have read on these forums:

Many times it would appear that some computer manufacturers have codes in the bios of the computer and/or the video card that make the one compatible with the other. If the card bios lacks the necessary information under these circumstances, the card will not work even though it is physically compatible.

The member who "knows all" (literally) about this is Prema. Start your pilgrimage and seek him out like one would the Dalai Lama, and you may get lucky enough to discover "the meaning of the whitelist"!

It's a BIOS issue. You can't readily upgrade the X775 with another GPU because they're BIOS locked to that machine. I.E. upgrading is out of the question unless you can find an unlocked Bios to check with...

Plus, they're on the same heatsink... I wouldn't go beyond a 765M if you DID upgrade, since the 770M is a 100w GPU and all that...

Yes, a BIOS issue. As Toshiba is notorious for BIOS locking of GPU to a machine.

Hi all, my 560m just died inside my x775 so I've been looking to replace the gpu, which I understand will most likely have to be another 560m. @themanwithsauce, did you ever consult the "Dali Lama", or go any further with your experiment? I saw a few other threads where the 675mx was recommended to try for its lower heat generation on the single fan cooling system... but nobody ever posted end game. Almost like they didn't want to admit defeat.

I'm a long time browser, first time poster obviously. Thanks for all of the massively useful info you guys are putting out.
