Hi, I would like to change the processor in my laptop. In this moment I have i5 430m, I would like to mount I7 720qm, or i7 740qm.
Temperature will look like? Wants to use thermally conductive paste Arctic Silver 5, and clean my laptop, because it was not cleaned.
Which processor will be better for me 720 or 740qm ?

I'm sorry for the language, I don't speak english good, I use translator :)

    Please answers.

    Thank you, greetings

Not much of a difference between the 720qm and 740qm.

    720qm: ARK | Intel® Core [ 1.6 to 2.8 GHZ ]
    740qm: ARK | Intel® Core [ 1.7 to 2.9 GHZ ]

I would go with 740qm just because it has a slightly higher clock; but if you can get an awesome deal on a 720qm, then get that.

Laptop is not cleared in the middle of the news.

Hard to say, but there will definitely be a temperature increase. However, it should still fall within normal operating temperatures.

I searched and could not find a L650 nor L655 that came stock with a i7 CPU; so a i7 may not be supported by the BIOS.

Since I could not find a L650/L655 model that comes stock from Toshiba with an i7, then the BIOS may not support an i7 CPU.
If there was such a model, and since ALL L650/L655 models use the same BIOS, then we could safely assume the BIOS supports i3/i5/i7. However, without such a model, there is no way to guarantee your upgrade will be successful.

There is nothing you can do to remedy that; no BIOS updates, nothing. However, your laptop may still work with an i7, but there's a chance it may not.

    **EDIT**
Sorry, I forgot to include the link I used to check: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?origin=new&ct=SB
Although these are USA models, the hardware should still be very similar.
However, if your looking for a BIOS, you need to check the Toshiba site that is native to where you originally purchased the laptop.

I can not find anything in that link that was written. Well, I do not know what to do still ... But it is easier to get my i7 than i5.

Sorry I was in a hurry when I posted my above reply.

From that link, you can click "Product Support" button from the top left and fill in the boxes until you get to the L650 models. I went through and checked about 7 L650 models, none of which had an i7 processor. I additionally I did a google search for "Toshiba Satellite L650 i7 CPU" and did not find any meaningful results.

    I don't find L650 witch i7, Toshiba does not produce the i7 processor :(
But I have new idea, because I read this topic http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...ly-update-hardware-but-help-me-plzzzzz-2.html and I doubt I have enough cooling. I'm not going mount additional heat sinf, and fan. Returning to the idea, I thought about installing i5 580, or i7 640- both i5 and i7 have TDP 35 W that is, as much as my 430m.

Which of these two is better?

    Do NOT  Never!

Just trust me. Buy either 620m-640m or at least 820qm-840qm.

Okay, I decided to change i5 to i7 720qm. I use good thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5), and I have hope it will be all good.

    It is your mistake choice.
740QM is the cheapest quadcore CPU where there is ANY sense to put in the laptop (assuming you are not doing videoediting where all 4 cores may be used).
Its turbo for 4/2/1 cores is: 1.86/2.53/2.93. Any time you are doing something else than open folders you processor will OC itself to the 2-core ratio and will shut down other 2 cores. It changes modes in milliseconds and you may say that it is dual core only 10% a day... but it happens 90% of the time you are doing smth. Because 1.86Ghz is not enough for many tasks and 4 cores aren't useful. Now think more and you will see that this 2 cores are just 2.53Ghz! What a joke! So I was wrong saying about 90% of time being dual core. Download Intel Turbo Boost Monitor v. 1.0.4 and you will see. Anytime clocks go to 2.64 or higher it becomes 1 (solo) core CPU.
And you bought 720QM? Which is 1X (1 multiplier) slower? Congratulations.

I7 8XX CPUs have different Turbo steps. 7XX has +1X for 4 cores, +6X for 2 cores and +9 for 1 core. 8XX processors have 2/8/10. Which means that 840QM with 1.86Ghz base clock has Turbo: 2.133/2.93/3.2. Do you see that it becomes dual core with 2.93Ghz frequency per each core? While 740QM reaches that frequency only being a single core CPU... while 720QM never reaches that at all.
I told you to buy either 6XXM I7 or 8XXQM. Don't tell me it is my fault because I had no time to write the same again but in detailed way in 10 hours after my first post here.
