Hey everybody, my friend is looking to do some hardware upgrades to his Qosmio G50-042 laptop. I found 8gig 800mhz ddr2-6400 ram for him, but I'm not sure what the max processor we can install into his unit.
He currently has:
Intel® Core2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.4GHz, 1066MHz
FSB, 3MB L2 Cache) with Intel® Centrino® 2 processor
technology
Toshiba Quad Core HD Processor
Any suggestions?
Thank you

Dunno what "Toshiba Quad Core HD Processor" is supposed to mean but the processor it has is a dual.
There is a user selling a T9800 on here for like 225. Its compatible with the chipset should be with the laptop. T9800 is 2.93Ghz and has 6MB of L2 cache. Its less power efficient but it plus some overclocking would perform well.

As far as the maximum, if it can take a quad there are about 3 choices starting with the 2 Ghz Q9000 and up. But for duals The T9900 or unlocked X9100 which is the same speed as the T9800. I forget the P line up but who cares. -
Thank you for your post.
Is there a max processor this latpop can take? is the T9800 the max for a dual core?
For the quad core, how would I know how much it can take safely before any heating issues if that were the case? -

T9900 is the next step up, the X9100 is also a suggestion if you plan to overclock but if you don't its identical to the T9800 in clock speed and it is potentially hotter than the T9800.
The quad is a gamble, if it can be done its best answered by someone who has done it, as far as a q9000 goes the replacement for my asus that can use a quad uses the same cooler so a well designed laptop which doesnt even describe myne could take it.
As far as hints of compatability, I would look at what was offered with the Toshibia G50 models, if there never was a quad you might not be able to use it. You might be able to extract the processor microcodes from the bios to see what it supports but i dont know anything about that. -
Theoritically, it should support up to QX9300. But as Clutch said, this is like gambling, do you know if the BIOS has support for Quad-Cores? Monitor your tempratures now, what are they?

Hello! Time to revive this thread rather then make a new one.
My friend is an intern @ an architect firm so he needs his laptop to run a bit faster.
I've looked at his current P8600 specs, and it's a Max TDP of 25W. The Intel T9900(what we would want if safe) has a TDP of 35 W.
Has anybody upgraded their CPU's ever here and went up by 10W on the processor upgrade?
The intel X9100 is 45 W max TDP so I think by almost doubling it, that wouldn't be safe at all.
Any suggestions?
I just don't want to order the processor and waste his time/money in this case.
I know if going from 25W to 35W his laptop might seem warmer and the temps might be a bit higher, but will they be too high with this increase?
Has anybody on the forums here put in a T9800/T9900??? -
Does anybody know if the BIOS will be compatible with the T9900?
I've searched around and found the following site, that sold the G50 with the T9400.
T9400:
The T9400 is a fast middle class dual core CPU for laptops and basically a Core 2 Duo P9500 with a higher TDP of 35 Watt.
P7350:
Entry level Core 2 Duo processor with 3 MB Level 2 Cache and due to the 25 Watt TDP also suited for 13" laptops.
P8400:
Middle class dual core CPU with a TDP of 25 Watt. For high end gamer the performance could be not sufficient (for class 1 graphic cards).
P8600:
Fast but still not overpriced dual core CPU. For most games and multimedia applications sufficient and due to the 25W TDP even for smaller notebooks useable.

So it seems that if the T9400 was in the G50, this one should work also I'm guessing. Unless they have a different/better cooling system for the G50 models that had the stronger CPU installed. -
