Yes, but not necessarily format. You can store the current data in Windows.Old when reinstalling.

You are trying to use the same 32-bit Key on the COA ? Does it not work with the 64-bit disc ?

No, you do not need to format. You need to Reinstall. If there is scarcity of space on the HDD, you can backup your important data on an external drive, and then format. If there is no data to backup, then you can format the HDD.
W.r.t. Windows.Old, checkout this link. (It'll tell you when you have to do what to keep your old files intact)

If you will reinstall, you will have possible problems.
Because "Program Files" folder on 32-bit edition will still contain programs (32-bit), and this folder with x64 contains 64-bit programs only, while 32-bit go to Program Files (x86). There are some similar caveats in Windows directory.

So if you reinstall, you will at least need to delete Program Files, Windows and Users directories before you install 64-bit OS.

BTW you can preserve a lot of settings by using Windows Easy Transfer.

On 32-bit OS, launch Windows Easy Transfer. Say you will transfer via HDD/memory stick/network share. Make it to save all settings to file.

Then clean all 32-bit OS leftovers (you will boot from external disk (like recovery CD) for that).

    Then instal 64-bit Vista.

Reinstall all application you saved settings for first (ie Microsoft office).

Then run Windows Easy Transfer on it, and import all settings from file you saved them in.

I've made it myself when I did upgrade from 32 to 64, and it saved me a lot of pain by preserving all my bookmarks, outlook contacts, desktop preferences, etc.

Thanks so much, i will try Easy Transfer, and if that goes wrong i take the format way out even if it is timeconsuming.

You can use Windows Easy Transfer even if you format. It will never cause problems, as it specifically designed for transfer between 32 and 64-bit versions

I, for instance, used it when I've upgraded my hard drive, so I've installed 64-bit on a new hard drive and used Easy Transfer to transfer settings from old drive and 32-bit Vista.

The recovery partition is for original OS (32-bit).
It won't work with 64-bit anyway.

But you can keep it if you want to, its on separate partition, just dont delete it.
Personally I've deleted mine just after I've got my notebook. Gained 4+ gigs from it, and installed clean Vista (it was x32 back then).

It will allow you to format when you start installing Vista (boot from CD), and choose advanced install. It will show complete disk & partition manager.

Ingvarr, first of all thanks for your great help. I have used computers since 1977 and was on the net in december 1988 when i worked for a goverment institution. But it is first time using Vista so i have to be used to it.
It works great now, i used F12 and put in the 64 bits CD. So now i have to innstall all Toshibas 64 bits drivere.
    Again thanks Ingvarr. :)
