My friend bought a P200-ST2061 identical to my own, and his webcam, when enabled for any program, goes on for a second or two, then goes blank.

This happens in the camera utility, in Skype, and while using Linux.

    Any ideas?

When you say blank... do you mean the light that shows it is ON turns off. Or is that light still on but the screen is black.

If just the screen is black, I found that if I have poor lighting, the auto light balance seems to go screwy (this is on my x205-sli1). If I get really close to the camera and then back away, it refocuses and auto adjusts the light usually. Or add more light to the room.

    hope that helps

No, it's blank as in off. We had our computers sitting side-by-side because I was trying to get Skype working on his machine and my camera worked fine and he could see me, but his would go on for a few seconds and then go blank.
