Hi iv recently noticed a weird noise coming from the side vent of my Toshiba P100 laptop (where the GPU is). What seems strange is that the noise wasnt there until i chnaged my drivers. .I had crappy 84.00 nvidia drivers and updated to 93.81.. Games ARE running more smoothly with frame rates not much healthier but with much less "Sudden drops in Fps" happening when playing games like need for speed most wanted..

I am very confused how an update of drivers could result in this noise suddently appearing!.. The noise is like a high frequency screaming/screatching noise and is quite audible when i put my ear up close to the side of my laptop.. It definately is not the fan and sounds like an audible electricity current or something..
Now i have had my laptop over clocked for sometime but the clocks are still way below what they can be put up to... I have them at 440/470 and i have "while testing a few months ago" had them at 460/500 and running stable!..

Has anyone else noticed such noises from there laptops like this?? Im afraid that my GPU is on its last legs even though its only 5 months old! :(

I posted last night about the same problem with my P105. It is periodic and annoying, and i have no idea what the deal is. mine has always done it though regardless of os or driver. i have intel 945gm chipset with intel graphics accelerator on mine. Any ideas?

Where on your laptop is the noise coming from? I have a Nvidia 7600 which itself is what i think the noise is coming from... It tends to come and go like you were saying... Really annoying!

Have you tried checking for anything loose on that side of your laptop? Is it happening all the time? Try identifying a pattern on when it's happening. When cold (newly booted), or maybe during heavy CPU / GPU usage like gaming or video encoding?

for me, it intensifies when there is a high degree of computing esp when watching a compressed video. but it is definitely a function of the amount of processes going on. nothing is loose as far as i can tell.

Yeah it actually only happens when my laptop has been started up (cold) .. It takes about 20mins for the noise to go away

I heard that noise when overclocked my ati x700. now it seems to be in connection to the frequency or something, cause temp isn't the issue. When I lowered down the clocks it stopped. It must be something with the GPU core or perhaps Heatsink + GPU core somehow producing the noise at hight clocks. Try under or overclocking and see what happens. I don't think your GPU is going to die.

    Cheers,

    Ivan
