I have an old Toshiba Satellite model 4025CDT which I no longer use. I am getting ready to donate the computer and am trying to backup my data to my Western Digital My Book Essential external USB hard drive.

The Western Digital website provides a Windows 98SE driver for this drive and I have installed it. When I plug-in the drive, Windows recognizes it as a 'My Book', but cannot find the driver.

I contacted Western Digital and this is what they said:

"The driver you downloaded for Windows 98 SE is just a bridgeboard driver and is not a system or OS driver that could be needed. Western Digital pre-formats your drive in a FAT32 File System. This File System is recognized by most computer operating systems, but in some cases, you need to make sure you have the latest BIOS updates and drivers installed for your system or motherboard, and any Windows updates and service packs. Windows XP has full driver support for external USB hard drives. However, if you are seeing an unknown driver listed in device manager under other devices or USB mass storage controller drivers, you would need to update or reinstall your USB port driver supplied by your system or motherboard manufacture before the drive will be recognized."

I looked on the Toshiba support site and do not see any download resembling the "USB port driver".

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks

the driver cd that u got with the toshiba. they contain drivers for ur northbridge and southbridge chips. thesouthbridge chip controls USB. many a time ppl forget to install chipset drivers as they see the machine is working fantastically without them. ( i did so when i got XP for the first time 6 yrs ago). make sure they are properly installed

btw....... does this machine recognise pen drives ??
