So whats the word on Toshiba? I really like the products they make (specifically the Portege r700 or in the future R830) on paper but i am wary on their lifespans. Im looking for this laptop to get me through college without any repairs. Is this possible or is repairing inevitable?

To be frank Toshiba is like any other company. The things they make work well as far as I'm concerned. And of course breakdown sometimes (nothing lasts forever). Before I got this lappy I had a A200 that worked great-never a problem. I only had to replace the screen because I stepped on it (LOL-oops). Another person will buy the same thing and have the worse experience ever. There is a Toshiba horror thread somewhere in this forum. Don't take much from that thread, because the same kind of forum can be found in the Apple, Dell, Sony etc. threads. DON'T BUY (fill in the company name) worse ever blah, blah. Look for the type of lappy you want and just buy it. The lappy you buy, or for that matter anything you could ever buy (car, house etc) falls into the same catergory you get something and its the best, and another person buys the same thing and its a total horror.
Good Luck -
I completely agree with what Scanner said.
Toshiba makes good laptops. Of course there's a few lemons in there (just like every other company), but you get a 1 yr warranty with it. If your that worried with the quality, you can buy the "Expedited" repair service. Your supposed to get your laptop fixed in half the time it normally would take.
Good luck -
Did you ever repaste your Qosmio? Heard of anyone who did? I was looking up reviews because the 1080p version is pretty sweet, but heard it got real hot for some people..

Its possible those people had the older model qosimos. I remember reading posts like that on the earlier qosimos. I think those were the X500 series, I read those complaints on the Tosiba website forum. When I got mine (see sig) I had the i7 740 chip inside, and after playing games like crysis, or Metro 2033 for 2-3hrs GPU (video card) temp was 50-65c. The CPU temp was 60-65c. After I put in a i7 940 cpu, the temp maxed out at around 75c. When everything is idle (just surfing net cpu 45c, gpu 40c). If I hadn't changed the cpu I would not have had to repaste anything in my lappy, it was fine. I did repaste after inserting the new cpu-I used the IC 24carat thermal compound for repasting both the CPU and GPU. In this model you can't get to the CPU without breaking GPU thermal connection.

Ahbeyvuhgehduh Lost in contemplation....
Agreed and well said. -
I've had three Toshiba laptops. The first one my brother-in-law murdered, the second one I still have and it still works perfect (I have had to replace one of the fans twice), the third one I've had for a little over a year and am using right now and no problems with it yet.
Expect at least a few glitches unless it's a model that's been out for awhile.
Whats the rep on Toshiba?
