    I’m buying my first laptop. It’s a Toshiba M640.

What’s ToshibaDirect like? Should I buy from them? Or from somewhere else?

They have a really great deal on an M640. Brings the price down to $680, instead of $920. But it expires tomorrow.

    MORE DETAILS:

ToshibaDirect has what looks like a FANTASTIC offer of an automatic $240 off a pretty well stocked M640-BT2N25.

Here are the specs for $679:

    # Intel® Core™ i3-380M Processor (2.53 GHz, 3MB Cache)
    # Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium
    # 4GB DDR3 memory (FREE UPGRADE!)
    # 500GB hard drive (5400 rpm) (FREE UPGRADE!)
    # Intel® Integrated Graphics
    # DVD SuperMulti drive
    # 1366x768 native screen resolution
    # HDMI output
    # LED backlit keyboard (FREE UPGRADE!)
    # 802.11n wireless
    # Integrated webcam
    # harman/kardon® stereo speakers

I don't want an i5 or NVIDIA graphics, so I didn't bother to upgrade those. And I'd prefer battery life to the faster 7200rpm i3.

That's a not to bad a price for that machine.

Another good Toshiba for that price is the Toshiba portege r700.

Can buy from Best Buy for $699. Has about the same specs as above, but contains a metal chassis, only weighs 4 lbs and 13.3" screen.

    Thanks for the response, Alexmuw.

I looked very seriously at the Portege. The speakers killed it for me. They were atrocious! I mean, really really bad. And if I add in the weight of external speakers, the machine isn't so 3-pounds-and-portable anymore.

Also, the keyboard is shrunken just a bit too much for me. For some reason they get away with calling it a full keyboard, but it's not. The keys are about half the height of a normal key. As a touch typist, that's just death for me. Toshiba keyboards in general I'm not thrilled with. But the 645 is manageable. I can get used to it. The 705, not so much.

I liked the metal instead of the plastic, though. I even chatted with Toshiba to see if I could upgrade the speakers. Alas, it's not possible.

Very good points, I did not know the portege had such poor speakers.

I too am looking for a laptop with similar specs and price range (for my mom :) ).
If you get the M640, please make sure to do a review, as I might be getting a Satellite (don't know which model yet; but they're all pretty much the same, but vary in specs).
