    I have been a dedicated Toshiba user/owner for 10 years. Currently I own a 2001 Toshiba and it's about time to make an upgrade....

    Using the FAQ format, below are the requirements for a new laptop. I've done some searching but cannot decide on which Toshiba best fits my usage!

    Thanks for any Toshiba recommendations you can offer....

    General Usage

    I will be using the notebook as my all-around personal computer...
    * Preferably the notebook will have a docking station available for purchase for ease-of-travel.
    * It will be used mainly for internet browsing, storing/editing many pictures, listening to/storing music, using Outlook 2003 as email application, using Word for documents (university/work), and general productivity.
    * I am not a gamer.... I typically use the internet for VPN to work and coursework on a web forum. (And of course news and google!)
    * I do not do a lot of high-processor usage work (only a bit of photo editing now and then).

    I am looking for a portable/lightweight notebook preferably under 7.0 lbs. (give or take)...
    * Although it will serve as my desktop as well I travel a lot for leisure and for work. It needs to be sturdy (i.e. non-crushable in a stuffed carry-on -- have had problems with lots of books/paperwork crammed against it in its case and keyboard "marks" left on the screen) and small.
    * Battery life is important. I would like (ideally) 4 hours but anything above 3 is okay. I do not want the battery to get hot -- I have read about this problem with a few notebooks.
    * I intend on using this laptop for 3-4 years.

    Features
    * Over 60 GB Hard Drive space.
    * Burning CDs but burning lots of pictures -- considering using DVDs for higher storage capacity.
    * Only 3-4 applications at once.

    Graphics & Display
    * Larger screen... Don't really need top-of-the-line....
    * Do not care if widescreen or not (widescreen would be a bonus only if it did not rule out other features).
    * No need for XBrite, Crystal View, or Bright View.
    * If anything I will be playing Hearts... :)
    * 3D work = little (if any at all).

    Miscellaneous
    * Do not care about looks -- as long as it is small and sturdy.
    * Toshiba only.
    * PRICE RANGE: $1400-$1600. (Hopefully this is possible?)

    Can anyone offer me suggestions?
    Thank you very much.

    I would suggest looking at IBM thinkpads as a start. Their T42 series would be excellent for you needs... in fact, any Centrino/Pentium M notebook is ideal for you. If their prices are too high, I'd suggest looking at Toshiba Satellites.

    ASUS M6800Ne, P-M 1.5 Dothan, 512MB Ram, ASUS Combo drive, Samsung Spinpoint M 40G HDD with 8M cache, Mobility Radeon 9700

    If that's the case... then
    Toshiba Tecra A2-CM1

    If Dell reps were professional instead of long waiting on phone calls and phone call hangups I would say mine because you would still be getting a Toshiba 16 X 10 w/s configuration. I have a 512 MB single dimm, your requirement of a 80GB hard drive. I have the 1920 X 1220 or 2 million 342 thousand 400 pixel Hid def screen. I only have it at that tiny of font to watch wide screen DVD BTW screen size is 8&1/8 inch H and 13 & 1/16 inches W. I opted for their 24X CD-R/RW-DVD+R/RW 8 X recorder. I have tons of small now to 4.7GB DVD discs from 700MB CD-R, mostly DVD covers of w/s movies especially Criterion hard to get with spine number. I get about 175 to a CD, I should get about 6.71 times that amount or 1,175+ to a DVD, thank goodness for calculaters. I hope this helps you in your decision on what to buy yourself.[ :)]

    Tecra M2s seem right up your alley in this case. Check out this page for some ideas:

    http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/cmod.to?seg=HHO&coid=-26376&sel=0&rcid=-26367&ccid=1291021

    The M2 allows for a slim-bay battery to increase your potential battery life to 11.5 hours.
