    I have a Toshiba Satellite A30, P4 3.06Ghz, 9000IGP and 512mb ram.

There are two sticks of 256mb, which makes a total of 512mb, but when I go to system properties (right click on my computer, properties), it says I only have 384mb of ram. Why is this?

You have the ATi 9000 integrated graphics which does not have its own memory. So, like any graphics without dedicated memory it is reserving 128MB of your 512MB RAM for its use.
