Well, the story goes something like this....I bought a Toshiba P15-S409 off of the Toshiba website in the end of January. Within the first month the DVD drive stopped working. So, seeing that it was under warranty (sp?) I sent it back in for repair...and seeing that I'm in Iraq w/ the US military it took two weeks to get to my family back in the states, and a week for them to fix it.... and two weeks for it to get back to me. and not even a month later, the screen goes black on me....I figure that it's something to do with the video card...I all Toshiba back and pregnant dog about it, and they tell me to send it in again...I do...just because it's really my only choice...short of buying a new system....so I wait over a month and I get it back from the states. and the screen works fine, but I tried to plug in my USB mouse, and it doesn't work. So I figure that it's the mouse...and I try to use my USB thumbdrive, and that doesn't work either.... So now I'm getty upset...the paperwork that came back w/ my system said that they changed the system board, and that it passed all tests. But obviously no one ever checked the USB ports out, or nothiced that the divice manager had two processors...and three monitors, and the the switch on the outside of the unit for the wireless networking, wasn't hooked up at all....and it's stuck in the off position.....So needless to say I'm not happy. I called customer support and they said that they couldn't do anything except send it back to them to fix it again.....they can't replace it, or give me a refund.....So I'm here to post my gripe and let everyone know about my times and trials w/ Toshiba......I'm going to be posting on every board that I can find.....

I haven't seen anythingw/ the p15 but I've heard more than one horror story about the customer support. http://notebookforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=65 that is a link to the Toshiba forums on Notebook Forums. I've read quite a few posts there....and it all seems to be the same.... My next course of action is to see if I can do a charge back on my credit card and get my money back for this boat anchor that I bought. [B)]

    Hey Seph,

I have a P15-S479 that was also purchased in January. All the USB ports died when it was just a few weeks old. When I sent it in for repair, the tech also stated the DVD drive was stuck in region 2 [?][?][?] Either region 1 or 4 I could understand, but isn't region 2 northern Europe or something like that ? The DVD drive had also been working okay in the beginning. Finally today I got a call from the service people to report the new mobo has been installed and the laptop will be on it's way back to me tomorrow (see my other posts for more info on that saga).

In your travels of posting to various other boards, if you bump into anyone else having similar faults with this model, I'd appreciate you letting us know.

    Cheers,
    Jason

First off, my prayers and sympathy to you for being in Iraq. It's a tough job and despite all the BS in the media, there are alot of us back in the states that recognize progress is being made and that it's a tough job. The politics of it are another story, but we're commited and our forces are doing an excellent job. BRAVO!!

Sorry to hear about your Toshiba issue. I only own one and it is an Asian model. The one time I had to send it in, it was serviced by the vendor and not Toshiba directly, so I can't even commiserate (sp?). One thing I wanted to throw out there, could the enviorment be playing a roll in your troubles? Granted, there is no excuse for the mssed up Device Manager or LAN switch, but given the sand and heat of the region, I can't help but wonder if that is causing some of your glitches.

no...I'm personally in the northern part of Iraq...There isn't any sand around here.... There's grass and trees, and the like.... and so far it hasn't been very hot...not much hotter than it gets in the states. the first problem cropped up when I first got here, so I don't think that it had any thing to do w/ the conditions. And as far as the display dieing, who's to say what caused that. But the latest problems, are just plain sloppy workmanship.

I would not be surprised if the 1st problem you had was just bad luck, and the rest of the problems were due to the extreme shipping the poor notebook had to endure Of course i cant be sure of this, and i know how frusterating it can be to have problems with a product that dont seem to get resolved. I would call Toshiba and ask them if there is any way to get it fixed closer to where you are so it wouldnt have to be shipped all over kingdom come. Good luck with the notebook...I really hope your problems get resolved[8]
