Overheating was a problem on the Qosmio x505 q870-880 series. The problem was the inferior nvidia GTS 360m GPU; the GTS 360m is an overclocked GTS 260m [hence the problem]
Actually, just about any laptop that had the GTS 360m GPU had overheating problems, hence why Toshiba quickly launched the GTX 460m versions [q890s and q8100s].

The current offerings of x505s are very good. The GTX 460m GPU maxes out at 70-73 degrees Celsius; which is still very cool [I run HWmonitor while gaming; keeps tracks of highest temps reached]. I reached those temps after playing games like Crysis 2 and Dead Space 2 on very high, to MAX detail settings, for a couple hours at a time.

HOWEVER, why not buy a Qosmio x770 series ? They just came out and have an even faster GTX 560m GPU. The i5 version is also $1199.

    Good luck
