    Just purchased form Office Depot.

Bottom of netbook has easy access to memory and harddrive for upgrades. Upgraded memory to 2gb and swapped out 160hd for 320gb hd.

Used a usb dvd and installed Windows 7 RC ultimate.

So far running well. Only real hardware driver needed was the Bluetooth and installed "usb sleep" software

Thanks for the info. I just received mine on the 25th. Ordered it from Toshiba Direct on the 24th and received it the next day but been so busy with work that I haven't had the time to open the box.

I had just purchased, last month, an HP Mini from Costco but returned it because there was a major problem with the battery release. The Toshiba came out just as I returned the HP, and I am really looking forward to using it.

I have three other Toshiba laptops and really like the brand.

A person this forum said his Toshiba 205 was over heating and excessive fan noise. Are either of you see this. I have one on order and was a little worried.

I haven't taken mine out of the box yet, but if it does have those problems, this puppy is going right back in the box and going back from whence it came.

That would be *me* ^^.. sorry for late reply..
as i said before, i think mine was defective one which produced tremendous heat on bottom, and fan was going crazy...lol

i ended up return it.. I think Nb205.. is not that great netbook than other netbooks out there.. i actually thinking to going back to Samsung...
but that is just my opinion.. you may like yours.. ^^

OK...Instead of going to the gym tonight, I did the "unboxing."

First impression is I loved the keyboard. Not crazy about the bezel around the screen but I knew that already.

Love the 3 USB ports, instead of the 2 on the HP Mini.

No excessive heat or fan noise. Fan only goes on intermittently during some major tasks.

BUT...I have major quality control issues with Toshiba and am tempted to put this back in the box and ship it back to them.

The netbook could not detect ANY wireless networks in range, including my own. There is no obvious switch to switch the wireless on and off. Toshiba's ridiculous instructions simply tell you to go online. Well, what if you cannot get online?

I went into ConfigFree and followed the directions. Configfree is a gimmicky, bloated Toshiba installation which really does nothing. It told me to press the Function key and F8 to enable the wireless. Nothing happened.

I called Toshiba Technical Support, which was of little help. Finally, they had me uninstall the wireless adapter and then restart to reinstall it.

    Finally, that worked.

I have 3 other Toshiba laptops, and none of them made me jump through these hoops to get wireless enabled. Toshiba's quality control seems to be lacking.

I promised the Toshiba Technical Support rep that I would be relating my story online. He suggested I call Customer Service on Monday. The only reason I would call them would be to return this thing.

So far, I am NOT feeling this machine. I have a feeling it is going back in the box on Monday.

    Any other feedback?

I have not had any xs heat or fan noises. In terms of my initial use of windows xp HOme and connecting to Wifi, I had a similar experience using the "config free" and connecting to my secure network. I rebooted my router and finally was able to connect.

I agree config free looks cool but I'm not sure of its role. I did not reinstall it with my windows 7 install.

Windows 7 seems to be still working well. I haven't drained the battery yet to see if there is a difference in battery life.

Official upgrades that worked: installed 2gb RAM, and WD 320gb hard drive.

Next possible realm for testing will be with "Insanely Mac" but not for a month or so. ** Please no discussion on installing mac os **

    Bulit,
So you can disable the wireless(if you get it to work) by Func key+F8?? I think disabling the wireless is important to save battery life if you are on an airplane or doing something that does not need access.

I just Googled "Connection Free" and it seems people with Toshiba and XP had problems. Is it possible to uninstall connection free and connect with XP as you normally would??

i am sure you could uninstall program using add/remove in control panel.

i did a clean install for XP. Also did Win 7 installed.

Nb205 runs much better with XP than Win 7, (though W7 does look better)

I did not have wireless connection problem.. that is after a clean install of XP.

Excuse me for being slow and not up to date on all the tec stuff. How do you do a clean install? I mean where do you get the XP to install? Did you have any connection problems before the clean install?

P.S. I am 66 yrs old so forgive my lack of savvy in the computer world.

Decided to cancel the order for the Toshiba and ordered the Asus1000HE like my wife has. It has been perfect and the battery is super long. Of course nothing compares to my MacBook Pro.

Greetings - my NB205 is still on the slow boat from J & R Music in NYC. One thing I haven't found an answer on - does the NB205 come with a restore CD/DVD or are you forced to use a restore partition? I liked the fact that my (now sold) Eee PC 1000 came with a restore DVD. Thanks in advance...

Just got the NB205 from BestBuy today. Currently using it right now. How do I achieve the stated 9.5 hours battery life? I'm currently running it on normal mode with 50% screen brightness. It's a nice netbook (and my first!). I may get a 2GB stick and put it in here but it seems fairly fast right now. I have yet to see how fast it loads up. Perhaps I'll restart the computer soon. :)

OK I just got mine from Office Depot today and let it fully charge for 6 hours. I am now running on battery to see how long it will go. The Wi Fi problems that some have complained may have to do with the Wi Fi being off by default(FN+F8 to turn on). I had an Aspire One(both Linux and Win versions) and this is far nicer. Upgrading both HDD and RAM is a snap, the keyboard is very nice, the screen is OK, the camera is pretty good and the touchpad is great. I burned the recovery DVDs on an external drive, disabled most of the startup programs Toshiba installs and did all the Windows updates. The netbook is snappy but it does get a bit warm at the bottom of the case. Having Bluetooth was a pleasant surprise as I didn't realized it had it. The look is pleasing except for the screen bezel which is too thick. Wireless connection has been strong throughout my house and even out on the patio. After about an hour and 15 minutes on battery surfing and at 50% brightness the battery is at 86%. That's it for now.

EDIT. I forgot to mention the ONE speaker s***s

I agree that the netbook does get kind of hot. When I got this I let it charge for maybe 1 hour? I don't know. Then I unplugged it. I've gotten 5 and a half hours and it's still has 22% remaining battery. I also disabled most of the startup programs. They were so annoying. I agree that the look of the netbook is nice and the screen definitely could be bigger. I mostly got it over the new ASUS 1005HA because it was a lot thinner and the battery sticking out isn't really that bad. I have yet to use the Bluetooth or camera yet but maybe I'll try that later.

Would you recommend upgrading the memory? If so, which one did you get? Could you link it to me? Thanks. :)

Overall, I love it. It's nice and small and thin. Now I'm just waiting for my external optical drive so I can put Microsoft Word/etc on it. :)

I haven't yet upgraded the memory but I plan to ASAP.
I will be getting this from Newegg because its the least expensive AND has free shipping. Its a shame though that the netbook has only one RAM slot so you are waisting a perfectly good 1Gb module.

Okay. Thanks. What's the free program that you can DL that tells you the type of memory the computer uses so you'll know what type of memory to get? I forgot what it's called. Yeah, it really is too bad that there is a waste of 1 GB of memory.

You can go to Crucial's website and run their scanner. You can buy the memory from them direct, their products are excellent and (usually) more expensive.

    Okay. Thanks.

I did the msconfig to remove all the startup apps. But once it did and I plugged the netbook into to charge I couldn't get a battery indicator. On the initial start up, there are 2 indicators of battery. One that's very basic (just image of battery at taskbar) and another that's the Toshiba version (battery with 2 hands almost gripping the bottom of the battery) that states different power levels. I'm wondering which one I need to enable in order in msconfig to view the battery level (one with battery and 2 hands) while charging the netbook. Thanks.

I don't know which is the "Toshiba power saver" but you can experiment in msconfig and figure it out. As far as I am concerned I am using the Windows one and the Toshiba power saver option is there to use if you want.

Lol. Nevermind. I didn't realize the battery indicator light goes green when the battery is fully charged.

Also, is yours getting really hot? Mine hit 10% battery life last night and I plugged it in. Then I closed the lid (it still leaves the netbook on) but the bottom of then netbook got really hot. I'm wondering if this is because fo the battery being charged. I unplugged it once the battery was done charging then I put it in hibernate. Only problem I don't like so far is the heat.

It gets pretty hot but you should make sure its set-up to hibernate when the lid is closed.
