    Hi there,

I recently encountered a virus on my Toshiba A100-VA9 laptop. I had no choice but to factory restore my laptop. I was able to factory restore but the problem is now, every time I install windows updates for vista, it crashes every time I am required to reboot. I can not even go into Safe Mode. So I had to system restore again. I've had to do this several times. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I can not install SP1 and that is the farthest I went during some attempts. I have ran CHKDSK and it seems to be the fact that every time I restore it, there are errors but each time I scan it, its something new. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

When you say, "I have ran CHKDSK and it seems to be the fact that every time I restore it, there are errors but each time I scan it, its something new", what exactly do you mean? Did chkdsk find errors?

    Try running HD Tune: http://www.hdtune.com/hdtune_255.exe

Once installed click the "Error Scan" tab & click start. It will take a little while to finish, but be patient. Do the full scan (it's the default, so simply don't click "Quick Scan", it's not as thorough). Post if it reports any damaged blocks (red squares) and how many it found.

Thanks for the reply Gregory. Yes. Chkdsk has found errors each time I scan it. Even after a fresh factory restore, I will find some errors. I will download HDTune and see what the results will find. I am actually starting to suspect that my hdd is done.

An update. I know you told me to be paitent, but the thing was stock on the same block for an hour. I guess it had to be the HDD causing the problems. I borrowed my dad's HDD and what do you know, everything works. Updates are flawless and with no crashes. Thanks for the help Gregory.

I'm glad everything worked out well :). Hard drives are pretty inexpensive, so it's not the end of the world if you're out of warranty.
