I am thinking about a new Toshiba notebook, however I hate all the bloatware loaded on them. My question is, can I buy the Toshiba and completely reformat the drive and load my own copy of XP home? Will the notebook operate properly like this or are there programs preloaded that the system will have to have to operate properly? thank you

Yes, that is called reinstalling the OS fresh and many people do that to take full advantage of their systems.

You will obviously need to download all the appropriate drivers and utilities for all your hardware to work properly. You can get those from the Toshiba website.

There are threads about finding all of the correct drivers ( the SATA is one you MUST have up front for XP). In my case, I'm not running the little application for the function/hot keys, as it never worked right even in the OEM install. You can do everything via other settings, so no big loss.

I did install the Synaptics touchpad driver, as the touchpad was too sensitive without it. Everytime I would brush against it while typing, it would erase my typing. The touchpad utility allows you do de-sensitive it.

Otherwise, just do a clean install, get the Microsoft KB888111 hot fix (again for XP), and install drivers.
