A few months ago I had a problem with HD-DVDs not playing on my X205. I think the DVD player was bad. While troubleshooting, I made some configuration changes to automatically output to HDMI when an HD-DVD is played. I just replaced the DVD player, which hopefully fixed the bad player. But now, when I put in an HD-DVD, I keep getting an error that saids:

"Unable to output the video to an external device. Please switch your display device by pressing the Fn+F5 keys after ending the application."

I'm guessing things will be fine if my laptop was connected to my TV through HDMI. But I just want to watch HD on my laptop for now. The problem is I forgot how I made the changes to auto out to HDMI. I don't remember where to go to change back the DVD output. Help pls. (pressing Fn+F5 doesn't work)

    hi there,
i just recently purchased the same notebook two weeks ago. x205 s9349.
you need to go to toshiba's technical supprt to the list of new drivers. you have to download the audio driver for your model the video card driver for your model and the hd toshiba player for the x205 sli-3 model for it to work on your x205 s9349 or s9359. there is a player listed under the x205 s9349 but trust me it doesn't fix the error either. it took me 2 days to get the hd player working properly. another issue there is is that if you are playing a hd dvd with a disk that has web enabled updates you need to make sure you are NOT connected to the internet for the dvd to play the movie. the error you keep receiving is driver errors.

i hope this will save you a lot of trouble. i read post after post looking for help.

Well, I did as you directed and guess what....it worked! I basically installed ALL the SL3 drivers (including the HD-DVD player) from September and now I'm watching HD-DVD on my laptop for the first time. Stunning. Thanks for the help. :)

Looks like I spoke too soon. After 10 minutes of playing, the HD-DVD just stopped. I got a message saying something about checking the disk. I put in another HD-DVD and all it did was spin for awhile and then stops. HDDVDs are not being recognized any more. Seems like a driver issue to me. I hate to install XP, but I might have no choice. That, or I can wait awhile for drivers to come out.

BTW, this is a replacement CD player. I had the first one replaced cause I thought it was a hardware issue. Apparently, it isn't. :_(

Make sure you have the latest HD DVD driver:
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_dtlViewDL.jsp?soid=1775409&moid=1757702&rpn=PSPB9U&BV_SessionID=@@@@0722798523.1194941805@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccdaddmhmgjddecgfkceghdgngdgmm.0&ct=DL&all_docs=false

    and the latest player http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_dtlView.jsp?soid=1840938&BV_SessionID=@@@@0722798523.1194941805@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccdaddmhmgjddecgfkceghdgngdgmm.0

To play HD DVDs on your TV, right click on your desktop AFTER you have connected to your TV and click on NVIDIA Contol Panel, then Display, then under Multiple Displays click on Change Display Configuration. Choose your TV's display under 2 and then under 1 choose Only Use One Display. Your PC screen will go black but your TV will now display the movie in HD. It should go back automatically afterwards.

Don’t know if you’re still having issues or not, but I thought I’d chime in here as I just went through the same HD issues you are.

First off, (and you may have already done this) you MUST install this firmware update for your HD-DVD player - located here.
The X205 model isn’t shown as one of the affected models, but trust me it is (I own the S9349). Just go to the support page for your model and you’ll see this as one of the topics. Once I applied this update, I was able to watch my HD-DVDs with no problem.

Regarding watching the HD-DVD’s on your TV . . . I “accidentally” discovered that when you do the “FN + F5” toggle (the options come down from the top of the screen), you can actually click on which particular setup you want . . . just click on the “HDMI” option and it will move your entire desktop to the TV (and turn off the laptop’s display). A very easy, very quick way to toggle between your laptop and TV . . . no need to enter into the NVIDIA panel or extend your desktop, etc. There are other connection options there as well (i.e. Laptop w/Display, Laptop w/Laptop, etc.).

    Hope that helps.

p.s. can't quite remember as I'm not at my laptop right now, but you might have to press and HOLD the "FN + F5" keys to get the drop down menu I spoke of above.
