I have a 2.5 year old X205-Sli 3, and it has had major repairs done under warranty twice so far (including new hard drives, new mother board, and new GPU's last time). Anyway, I have about 6 months of warranty left, and if it is going to die again, I'd love for it to happen BEFORE the warranty ends!

Anyway, about once a week, I'm getting a high pitched squeeling sound for about 3-4 seconds. It doesn't sound mechanical (ie hard drive head, or fan scraping), but more like a warning alarm. There is no sign of overheating, as both fans are clear/clean and blowing lots of cool/warm air appropriate for use.

Anybody know if there are any built in alarms in this system, and how I can figure out what exactly is going on. So far, there are no performance issues, just the noise.

    Thanks!

Just because it doesn't sounds mechanical, doesn't mean it isn't. I've known HDD's to make really high pitched sounds, like what you are describing. Have you got another HDD to test?

no I don't, and it's completely random, AND the X205-Sli3 has 2 hard drives so I don't even know which it could be.
