Hello all. I recently upgraded my HDD's from the 5400's that came with this laptop to 7200's. I could only buy 1 7200 a couple weeks ago and i reinstalled from recovery disks onto that single disk (to clarify i did not try to run a 7200 and a 5400) --ran all updates etc. Today I bought the second 7200 drive and installed it. I guess I thought I could just open the second compartment and it would work. Also when it came out of the box only one of the drives (c)contained os and info the second drive only had 1 file (i think) not sure what it was called. I could not select this drive to save anything on to it or anything like that -------- they were shared. What is this called? How can I get it there again? I saw on forums that I should go to diskmgmt.msc and initilize the disk which I did. But it is still unallocated. How di I get it to connect with the other disk like it was with the two 5400's when it was new?
The model is x205 sli-1 has dual hdd and dual gforce. here is detailed spec sheet linkage:

any suggestions? thoughts?

Sounds like you need to format the HDD, then windows can use it.
Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Disk Management
or
diskmgmt.msc
Find new HDD, format to NTFS. -
Thank you for the reply,
ok did it... so now i have disk 0 which is my c drive which has: system, boot, page file, primary partition etc.
and the one I formatted is now disk 1 (drive f) it is now active and has only primary partition.
is this right? seems there should be some files on there. lemme see if i need to enable "view hidden files" or the like. I just want this to be a "slave" drive? is this right? -
Were you able to figure out your problem?
What kind of Hard drives did you buy? Was it easy to replace them? I'm thinking of replacing them too.
Do you think that if I put DDR2 800 ram in this laptop will it work ok, even if this laptop uses DDR2 667?
Anybody with that laptop "x205-SLi1" is able to install windows 7? is it hard to get it to work, meaning Ethernet card drivers, HD-DVD drivers (don't care much if it can read HD-DVD but regular dvds and cds need to work).
Thank you for your help.

does anyone know if i use the recovery disks to reinstall vista if they will wipe the second hard drive.
i recently installed windows seven but i want to go back to the oem system. however, i don't want to wipe the second hard drive.
anyone know the deal? -
It will only wipe the C drive. But if you want to be double sure, you can always take out the second HDD while you format.

does anyone know the answer to my previous post? -
Well Its been a while on this but imo i would not put much more time/money into this laptop as its becoming old/outdated. But I was wondering if anyone can make sense of this post i found, its about hdd arrays and i am hoping one of you really know this stuff because i am getting nowhere. after this guy gives a bunch of benchmarks he says this:
"I think a very nice plus of the X205-SLI is the 2 disk SATA array that helps to outperform other systems because the average for any single 8600GT is around 2900 3DMmarks"
what is this array and if you replace the hdd's will it go back to the original array setting? -
Do not know much about the benchmark, but installing a 7200 RPM Hard drive as a OS hard drive made a big difference in this laptop, also upgrading to 4Gb of Ram also helped and installing windows 7 64bit ran perfectly fine no problems. Also installing the video drivers from nvidia had no problems either.

I have the SLI3 which is very similar. On the 7200RPM drives, I would NOT suggest the Seagate 500Gb 7200 drives in this model. Every few minutes you'll hear the really loud "clack" of the drive heads parking then unparking. This is a known issue with many different models and only APPLE convinced Seagate to update the firmware to fix it. Shame.

That is why I only buy western digital hard drives, so far I have not had a problem with them on any of my computers.

something is up with the chipset (I think) when i open device manager I see that the "other devices" _"mass storage controller is flagged. properties of the device show it located at PCI bus 18, device 4, function 2. says the drivers are not installed and can't locate them. when i googled several of the details (such as hardware id) i find some info but really its beyond my abilities to know what to do with the info. it looks like it is intel's chipset issue tho some think its a Tex Instrmnts issue other think its infared or bluetooth. who knows? tosh support was fail. they nero said "all that's easy. just update your bios and drivers." yeah.... fail.
-
Not really sure about that problem, when looking for drivers also look for vista drivers if no windows 7 drivers are available. Good luck.
If possible, you cam just start over and install windows 7 again. -
And you installed this chipset driver?
