So your laptop can see it as a hardware device, but will not recognize it within the OS.

Have you double clicked on the entry for the hard drive, to check whether it's reported working or not?

and it won't let me see its properties.

Install your mass storage controller driver.
You can see in your snapshot of device manager that your mass storage controller driver is not installed and until it is that can keep your second driver from showing in windows...

Right click on My Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management

See if the hard drive has a letter assigned to it.

well that doesn't really help me as I can't install that mass storage controller, I don't know what driver it needs and automatically looking for one didn't help.
No, it doesn't have a letter assigned to it. Also it's status, if this helps any, is:
    healthy(GPT Protective Partition)

If computer management can see the HDD then it's time to create a partition on the disc and then assign a drive letter. New HDDs are not formatted and until that happens Windows cannot use them.

    thanks I'll try it.
if only it were that easy, but it won't let me mess with the drive to format it. Besides I have a lot of games on there, I don't want to wipe it clean.
