    Hey All,
I've got an X205-SLI1 and have been trying out some of the newest display drivers from laptopvideo2go and nvision(currently have 174.74 installed) and am completely undecided as to which has given me the best performance. I'm mostly using it to play Flight Simulator X. I have noticed that the 174.74 seems to run hotter and that my machine has had some lag with these drivers. The 169.xx drivers seemed good enough and I was also still able to use the stock HD DVD player. With the 174.74, the HD DVD will not function to play HD movies. Bottom line is I'm thinking of reverting back to the 169.xx drivers. Can anybody tell me which driver they've had the BEST performance with while maintaining optimal temps AND keeping the functionality of the HD DVD player? I'm not interested in spending any money to "buy" new HD player software given the demise of HD format. Also, if you're playing FSX too, then your input is particularly helpful!

Thanks in advance for your input! :)

You should be able to use the 174.31 for Dell and Compaq or 174.82 driver from Clevo that laptopvideo2go,com has with the original inf file that the driver has and still use the Hd DVD player you just have to install the driver manually and tell it you have the disk with the driver, I used both of these on my M1730 and I was able to use the Blue Ray to watch movies, so it should work for you as well both drivers are good and are worth trying.

Thanks for the reply Jesse. What driver are you currently using with your X205? I think I recall in one of your other posts on another thread that you weren't using the stock Tosh HD DVD player.

I am currently running 174.31 on the X205-sli1 and on the S9349 laptops and I am using 174.82 on the XPS M1730 laptop the 174.31 are working really good on both of the X205's.

is the 174.82 any better than the .31? I have the x205 sli1 and have .31. If I wanted to try .82 do I just download the driver and inf on the same download page and use the have disk method? That's how I installed .31, but I keep hearing about using the original inf although I don't know how, so I just use the modified inf that's listed to the right of the drivers on laptopvideo2go.

You are correct in using the moddified inf. for the 174 series as long as they are WHQL certified. What you heard about using the original nvco.inf is only if you are using drivers which are not WHQL certified so you can use the original nvco.inf and moddify it so that you can still use the HD DVD player.

I updated the driver to 174.31 and used the modded inf. from nvision as well but CANNOT play HD DVD in the toshiba player. Says another app is using the PC's video function - the standard error message. When I used the 169.xx driver, I was able to use the HD DVD still.

    Any ideas?

if thats the case why not stick with the 169's they are good drivers especially for gaming. Also, you might try the 174.74 http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=18049, they are also WHQL certified. That is weird though as the 174.31 is WHQL certified. Another method is to get nvco.inf from the original toshiba video drivers and rename that file to nvdisp.inf and then change the driver version and date to match the modded inf for the 174's, and then copy your newly created nvdisp.inf to the 174 directory.

Yes, it is weird. Same results with the 174.74 as 174.3....no HD DVD playback.

I moved from the 169.xx to the 174.xx b/c I thought there would be some noticable improvements. Not that 169 was bad per se.

Oddly, the only way I was able to actually get the 169.xx to work with the HD DVD functionality was because one of the gurus here was kind enough to upload the modified inf file and driver. It's was basically idiot proof. I haven't been able to modify the inf. successfully yet.

If you need help with the mods let me know. i might have the nvco.inf saved somewhere on my Sli1, ill check when i get home from work tonight. if i still have the nvco.inf i can make you a new nvdisp.inf for the 174.xx if you want. otherwise.... i would have to roll back to the original toshiba driver to get the nvco.inf :(

Also i am not positive, but i think that 169.xx will actually give you a little better 3dMark06 score than the 174.xx. The 169.xx were actually made specifically for improvements with gaming. Someone please correct me if this isnt true... ;)

What are the advantages of 174.31 (or any of the other 174s for that matter) over the 169.xx? Also, out of the 169s, which has the best OVERALL performance? Right now, the only games I'm playing are flight sims (FSX, CFS3, IL-2 Sturmovik, etc).

If I should stick with the 174.31, then if you could send the mod'ed inf file that would be stellar.

I really don't know which to go with as you can tell.

honestly, there probably isnt a "significant" difference. if your flight sims are running with good FPS with the 169.xx and your HDDVD works then there is no reason at all to switch back to the 174.xx the only real reason ive heard from people who use the 174.xx is that they are more comfortable knowing that those drivers are WHQL certified, but i have never had any problem with my 169.61 and all of my games run perfectly, my HD DVD works perfectly so i am perfectly satisfied with the 169.xx oh and i forgot to save a copy of the nvco.inf so if you have a copy of that file i can mod it for you if you want to upload it for me.

I just looked thru my recycle bin and I found the modded 169.09 drivers and inf file that I got from a fellow poster on here (again...could be chaz, jesse, be77solo....I don't recall). I'm going to uninstall the 174.31, run clean sweep, then reinstall the 169.09.

    Thanks for the help!

Hello all, I am running the 167.62 drivers on my X205-S9359 and I too cannot use the HD-DVD (had the same error as nikidawg - something along the lines of 'another program is using the video' or something of that sort). I tried to follow the thread on how to use the origional .inf file in my toshiba directory, but i couldn't find it. How do you mod one? Or, how do you make it work?

    Thanks in advance

Update - I've just tried moding the .inf file in toshiba's video driver (renamed it, copied the dates and driver version over, then put the file into my 167.62 folder), and it doesn't seem to work for me. I still get the error that toshiba's hd-dvd player gives about something else using the video display - default error. How can this be fixed without having to fall back on orignal toshiba drivers that are almost a year old?

    Again, thank you in advance.
