Hello all, I did a search and could not find the info I am looking for. I'm going to buy this from costco.com and I'm sure I can output via HDMI into my projector and have a true HD signal, but can I also output via SPDIF into my dolby digital (DD) receiver to have true surround sound? I read that windows can't decode DD without downloaded other files/codecs, is that still true? Has anyone done this before successfully? Thanks a lot!

Yes, it works perfectly. HDMI will give you your picture and S-PDIF will need a mini RCA to RCA into the composite input of your reciever. You could also send the HDMI to your reciever if it supported it. 5.1 is supported in both. However, there is no optical output on the x205.

Great! Thanks, I didnt realize that DD 5.1 could be carried through composite.

The mini RCA to RCA will not work. Already tried it. The SPDIF on your laptop is an optical connection. I have the X205-s9359 and I have already went thru this process (it took me about 2 weeks) so let me save you some time. You have two options you can buy a standard optical toslink cable and purchase a 1/8 mm adapter for the end that goes in your laptop http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002MQGRM/ref=pd_cp_e_3/002-2113702-0756041?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_r=18ETBBS6SQ9HAH31CSW2&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=250314601&pf_rd_i=B00003CWAA or you can buy an optical cable that has the standard toslink on one end and the 1/8mm on the other http://www.amazon.com/Monster-Cable-ILS100TM-2M-Performance-Fiber-Optic/dp/B00003CWAA/ref=sr_1_5/002-2113702-0756041?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1189015001&sr=1-5 . Here is a link to a forum that I posted in over at audiohoulics.com http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35220 . I bought the adapter for 2 bucks and it works great. I did have a headach getting it to work though. You have to go into the sound settings and test and confirm each output format (Dolby Digital, DTS, & some Windows format) for it to work. Good luck and I hope this saves you some time. I also hope these links work. If not let me know and I can tell you how to get there.

Hey thanks for the link and sharing the info... I was trying to figure out the best way to get sound into my reciever, and ya just told me.... thanks! Now if I can just get the dang Toshiba HD DVD Player to actually work with SLI and newer drivers....

Thanks for the replies. I pickup up a optical cable with adapter and it worked after doing what you said. At first, it didnt work but after a few tries, it did. One weird note, when you are in the toshiba hd dvd player software, under settings, audio, there is an option for 5.1, stereo, spdif, etc. Spdif did not give me any sound, but 5.1 produced 5.1 DD. Thanks!
I'm going to create a new post regarding the video quality and settings. I thought the HDDVD was a little dark. -
Thats weird. Mine defaults to the 5.1 setting and I cant get any sound unless I change it to the SPDIF setting. It seems to be a little buggy. Some times it takes a few tries to get it going. Good luck with the dark picture over the HDMI. I have a 50" Panasonic plasma and it is dark also. Ive tried changing the setting on my laptop but it does not change the tv screen.

I had an interesting problem with my DD sound, every 5 mins or so, I would hear a repetitive buzz or clicking noise that would last for 30 secs and go away. I dont think it the receiver becuase it only happens with the toshiba.
