I'm playing the exchange game with the Gateway 7811 due to overheating. I'm considering going with the X305-Q701 instead.

Could someone who has one please post temperatures of the hard drive, CPU, and GPU under load? (either Defrag\Virus scan\HD Tune the hard drive, Furmark the GPU, and Prime95 the CPU?) Maybe using HWmonitor.exe for the temps?

I would greatly appreciate it! I want a laptop that I don't have to constantly worry about a GPU overheating and dying, or losing data because the HD constantly runs at 55 - 60C...

    Thanks in advance!

Well I have the x305 had it for 2 weeks now and at first I was worried bout the temps cause it kept on climbing ever 30 seconds to 65 degrees celcius and the fan would kick in till it dropped to 55 degrees celcius then fan would shut off and it would climb again, and the cycle would repeat. I became aware of this because of another x300 (x305 european version) owner in europe that observed this, but I was comforted when Goph, I guess thats his handle, a poster on this forum told me that was normal for many gpus and notebook setup and I thought if it's happening to not just mine, but even the european model, Toshiba must've taken it into account when developing the system. I'm not sure how to post pics but I monitor temps using nvidia system monitor and I'm a hardcore gamer and my temps playing cod4 multiplayer for many hours on end gets up to 82-84 degrees celcius, that seems pretty average and better than my previous notebook x205 that would sometimes go to 89. As I right this I'm here at Starbucks and just finished a 2 hour session of cod4 and Gears of War and my temps were at 82 it's now idle at 57 for the gpu and 60 for the cpu and you know what it doesn't climb like I mentioned earlier but stablizes. I guess at my house it's really muggy and hot in the afternoon so that's why it does that but I also have a targus chill mat which everyone bashes but to me it's a good model had it for almost a year now the new revision one that they sell at best buy, and it keeps my temps down at 56. The x305 has nice features is built solid and at the same time lighter than it's predecessor x205. So it may feel plasticy but Toshiba did it for a reason. People say it's ugly but the pics on the web don't do it justice in how it is in person in mint condition. I do want people to know that this is a very nice gaming notebook that Toshiba is trying to bring to the mainstream and I hope it does well because with my experience of toshiba's first gaming line of notebooks the x205 and now this x305 they are really putting out a quality product for us consumers, and many people bash and neg Toshiba and people that never tried the product brush it off just because of the neg reviews from so called experts that have an agenda to see other companies prosper. So if this get's more exposure and support we can see the 9700m gts getting better drivers and increase it's potential and Toshiba can pump out even more quality and affordable products in the future.

I appreciate the advice, but it looks like the only difference is the size of the hard drive (200gb vs 320gb). Other than that it appears to be identical. The Q701 is no longer on Best Buys site as of today, and it was an outlet item for the last week.

If I do switch from the 7811 to the Q701, I'm going to ask for the sale price (or less since it's clearance) of $1350, so it would still be $150 cheaper than the Q705...unless of course they put the Q705 on sale right away. I also may not be able to hang off for long because I need a laptop for classes which start this week!

It's pretty much as jacob describes (even for the x300 with the faster P8400 CPU).

In any case, I've ordered in the Zalman NC2000 to prevent the fans kicking in at a higher speed, but that's just preference.

I don't mind the fan so much as I'm concerned about the overall heating. 85C~ is not out of range for the GPU that is in the laptop. What about the hard drive? Has anyone run HD Tune? What temperatures does it report for the hard drive?

HDD hangs around the 35C mark and goes as high as 40 from what I've seen.

Those are pretty good if it maxes out at 40C under heavy load (or even just above 40C).

The heat dissipation fins span the entire depth of the laptop towards the rear. I've even had this thing sitting on the bed (with no real ventilation) for a few hours at a time without issue. Funny thing is, even in doing this, temps remain alsmost the same as on any other surface.
