Also since the higher end toshiba (q702) is going to house the 9800M GTX and a X9100 processor, I would guess that you could upgrade the current one (q701) once the price falls on those higher end components which also isnt do-able with the gateway not far as I know anyway

The X305 Q701 is better than the P6860FX in almost every way right now. But, the new FX kicks the living crap out of the Q701.

    Why?

    P8400 vs P7350
    800 DDR3 vs 1066 DDR3 (performance difference is negligible)
    1920 x 1200 vs 1440 x 900
    9800M GTS vs 9700M GTS

    Best part? You pay less.

So you get a higher resolution screen, better CPU, better GPU, slower RAM, better speakers for less. You do make a valid point of native resolution, but that's why it's scalable.

That said, you may have the option to upgrade the X305 Q701 to the 9800M GTX for probably quite a fair bit of cash. So on top of paying more for less in the first place, you're paying more to make it about 10-20% better (Maybe less).

That ain't how the UK version is spec'd UK version is like i said better than the 7811FX on every front

    P8600 vs P8400
    1066 DDR3 vs 800 DDR3
    320GB S.M.A.R.T HDD vs 200GB HDD
9700M GTS vs 9800M GTS - Gateway going by which is newer, but the 9700mgts will most likely perform better at 1444x900 than the 9800m gts will at 1920x1200
Harman Kardon stereo speakers vs Regular laptop speakers
Choice of 32 bit or 64 bit OS vs Only 64 bit OS
    Bluetooth vs No bluetooth
    Upgradability vs No upgradability

List goes on but I covered the main points I think

and the upgrades of the X9100 and 9800M GTX will make a huge difference 9800m gtx is way better than either 9700m gts or 9800m gts, same with the processor + the X9100 is overclockable

To be honest, the 9800M GTX isn't looking to be WAY better right now. The only data available shows some increase, but not by very much. I wouldn't put a lot of faith in notebookcheck's information. I'm just informing you of the possibility.

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-9800M-GTX.9919.0.html

More importantly, you're comparing the X300 X11S to the FX not the X305 Q701, whereas in your previous post you said

My point is that the X305 Q701 isn't.

The X300 11S is, but at a considerably higher cost. 1,200 pounds = 2.33K USD. You're paying $900 more for your advantages, this doesn't include the X9100 or 9800M GTX.

Additionally, the 7811FX isn't meant to compete with the EU version. Why? Simple. It's not available in the EU and the X300 11S isn't available in the United States as well. The only models that will be sold in the same area are the 7811FX and the X305 Q701.

Get this clear. I'm not saying the X305/X300 is a piece of crap. I'm saying you're making an unfair comparison.

I assumed the UK/US versions would be the same I only said Q701 because I knew a lot more people would know what I was referring to as opposed to if I had called it the X300-11S.

    7811FX vs X305 Q701
    7811FX vs X 300 11S

    Q701 vs X300 11S

    P7350 vs P8600
    Same RAM
    Same Screen
    200 vs 320 7200 RPM
    Same GPU

See my point? And for that, you're paying $2350 - (1550+tax) Approximately $700. Now, part of that has to do with the fact that American prices tend to be lower than Continental prices, and in some cases, substantially so.

I'd argue that you get a better deal with the 11S than you do with the Q701, particularly if you're comparing it to the 7811FX. It's more expensive, but at least you're getting more out of it. The Q701 is beaten in almost all areas and you're still paying more.

    Okay.

Firstly, we don't know if the Toshiba is EASILY upgradeable, since the 9800M GTX model isn't out yet. If it turns out to be based like the Q701, that's good. It will make it a much cheaper upgrade, compared to the older models when you had to switch out the entire. Not cheap, and completely simple either, but at least upgradeable. Aside from the upgradeable GPU, the X305 and 7811FX share the same upgrade paths. (same CPU/RAM/HDD options)

Secondly, I'm pretty certain you haven't personally handled both of these laptops. I could be wrong, but since you were asking the question of quality earlier...

yep, i have never used this specific models before, but i had used a gateway laptop before,(wasnt mine, just borowed it) and it wasn't that good compared to my HP at the time. oh and my HP was like a 2year older model than the gateway(it was brand new).

Exactly. But I'm sure you're aware that laptops are not made equal.

Gateways of different product lines would have different quality. Toshibas of different product lines would have different quality. You could fit any brand name into " ______ of different product lines would have different quality" and still be speaking the truth.

In case you're wondering, I actually OWN a FX. It's quite decently built, except for the screen, which isn't reinforced. Unfortunately, the same can be said of the X305.

Well, in your case, both models don't have coverage.

You pay less and get more with the FX hardware wise.

You don't get the bright red or harmon kardon speakers. You've handled the FX in person? Or seen pictures?

Hope you like it wet and warm. Enough off topic.

In summary, if you're buying in the U.S, the Q701 has very few advantages over the FX7811.

You get potential upgradeability (at a cost), better speakers, higher clocked DDR3 RAM (rather insignificant to be honest) a worse CPU/GPU/lower resolution screen and pay more.

If you're looking at budget models (below 2K USD), the FX still beats the X305. However, if you're looking at the Q702 (assuming specs don't change) that's a fairly decent buy. However, at that budget, you may be better off looking at other laptops.

If you're in the EU, you're better off with the X300 11S as you get a fair bit of upgraded stuff, as well as a warranty. The X305 (Best Buy models)/FX both don't have international warranties. The X300 should, especially if bought from Toshiba directly.

I'm on vacation now for 2 weeks so I wont be posting for a bit, sorry about earlier dtwn I wasn't dissing the Gateway or trying to come off aggressive, but yeah I agree things in the UK are extremely overpriced, easy to tell if you build a top end clevo in USD then build it in £ with same spec, much more expensive heh, anyway cyaaaaa

OH and a little feature i just realized, the left side actually has 2 USB ports, i only thought it was 1, but the top one is a hybrid port, supports USB or ESATA.

Same chassis saves cost. Cost savings are then transferred to the consumer. Not everyone wants a flaming red laptop.

Another factor, the FX series has been out a total of 6 months or so. How long has the Qosmio been out? If they were to come up with a new chassis for every update, that wouldn't be very useful.

There's been 3-4 updates so far. Largely minute upgrades, so it's not very fair to compare the two. The really big change is the 7811FX, the other models were basically the same, but with different upgrades.

If they choose to retain the same look, and price, I'm not complaining.

I'm considering, since I'm planning buying an HDTV to hook up to whichever laptop I end up buying, seeing if I can get a blu-ray disc drive for either this or the Gateway model.

So now I need to know whether either or both of these models (likely) has an upgradeable/replaceable disc drive and if so where would be the best place to get a built-for-laptop blu-ray drive?

Or would I have to go with something external? I read someplace something about having to get some kind of shell or something to put a regular internal drive inside then hook it up through there to the laptop or something rather complicated-sounding like that.

Hey, you guys might find this thread interesting.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=282795

Before you start cheering for the 9700M GTS, finish reading the thread first.

I'll get around to doing a 64 bit test eventually. If I remember, that is. :D

@DJGamer: To answer your question, both models should be equally easy. To switch out a optical drive, basically just remove it and put the new one in. You should also be able to remove your bezel from your original drive and put it on the new drive.

Well, my main issue now would be finding an inexpensive blu-ray drive for a laptop.

I've only found this one: http://www.laptopuniverse.com/productDetails.html?sess=ZnJvbT1zZWFyY2gmcGlkPTgyODAyJmNpZD05ODA0

Now the cheapest DVD player @ Best Buy right now is $279.99-so I'd might as well buy that when this sucker is $433.01 (plus shipping).

The other option is this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8844655&type=product&id=1208562591968

But it's built for desktops so I doubt it would fit unless there's some relatively inexpensive way to externalize it and connected it with the laptop.

    I found this: http://www.amazon.com/External-Bd-r...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1218253007&sr=8-1

But at 4x it would likely be super-slow, and there's the Internal one from Best Buy for just a little more and 4x the speed of...4x. lol

I could always go for installing the Blu-Ray internal drive on my desktop, but considering that I don't exactly considering it to have much of an entertainment center setup it's unlikely, plus I'm not entirely sure what resolution my monitor has-although my HDTV will likely be 720p-because the 1080p ones are twice as expensive in part because the screen just needs to be larger or something.

I am not sure how that shows that the 9700M GTS is not good enough. It looks more like it has a drop on DX10 mode when used with a slower CPU, than a performance issue of the card...no?

I'm not saying it's not good enough.

I'm saying the X9000/8800M GTS scored lower or equal than the X305 with 9700M GTS/P7350. However, both 8800M GTS/T9300 8800M GTS/T5450 beat the two by quite a bit. I'm not so sure about the CPU part actually, it sounds somewhat odd. I'm not saying the 9700M GTS is bad by any means.

The reason why I said to finish reading the thread before you start cheering is that the X9000/8800M GTS scored around the same level as the 9700M GTS/P7350, which if you had failed to finish reading the thread, would probably have given you a false idea of the 9700M GTS's performance.

Good thing then that I did finish reading it.

First of all, it is not the X305. Though similar configuration.

It would be nice to know driver versions installed in all the systems, as well as having more than one system with the 9700M GTS, the same way there were 3 systems with the 8800. Both of which would be very helpful. The drop in performance under 64bit is very interesting and it screams driver issue.

It's got essentially the same configuration as the X305 Q701, thus my focus on the 9700M GTS, not the X305/F55.

Exactly. Unfortunately not many users with 9700M GTS right now.

I was rather surprised at the poor performance of the 8800M GTS/X9000, so I figured I would load up DMC4 and give it a shot. Apparently I wasn't the only one who thought so.

Maybe because its a graphics demanding game?!

anyway I am planning to buy X305 and you seem to have it I have some questions about it (if you dont mind :) )

    1.Is keyboard really bad?
2.Is their stuff like face recognition/finger print reader?
3.Can you click a pic of the front side of laptop?(I really want to see that)
4.what all games have you tried?are they smooth?
5.I have seen some customer reviews on best buy people are complaning about "slow downs" have you experienced anything like that?
6.and how is the total feel of the laptop is it worth it(looks and working wise both)?or ASUS would be better way to go?

    Thanks a lot! :)

Not to steal any thunder, but please allow me to give you some answers.

    1. Absolutely not, it's a full sized keyboard, and I've had no problems gaming on it, however, it is a fingerprint magnet.
    2. There is face recognition support from Toshiba, I use it as standard logon method. No biometric fingerprint scanner out of the box, but you could buy a USB fingerprint scanner very easily.
    3. I already have all that, plus a full teardown.Pictures of the outside... http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v720/christopherquinalty/My Qosmio/
    Teardown... http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v720/christopherquinalty/Qosmio X305-Q701 disassembly/
    4. I havent found a game yet (sans crysis) that this thing couldnt handle smoothly.
5.I've said it once, and I'll say it again, the users experiencing slowdown, are either biased, or they dont know about the Windows vista, first run, optimization, like enabling both cores at all times, turning off indexing, reducing or disabling page file, turning off user account control, etc.
    6. The laptop feels very solid, a little on the heavy side for a laptop, but not for a desktop replacement, it is bright and flashy, making alot of other people with more modest notebooks, quite jealous, funcionality-wise, I am extremely pleased with my purchase, and have swayed a few happy friends towards this particular model....they've never been happier. I would say though that it comes down to a matter of personal brand preference, which do you prefer. I do not own an ASUS, but I own a Toshiba, and it goes above and beyond what I expected....keep in mind that I have proven with a teardown, that the cpu appears upgradable, as well as the GPU...just a thought to sleep on, though whatever your choice, i hope you enjoy your purchase...

Yeah cq beat me to it lol. I took pics and posted a few pages back, but i don't think personlly DMC4 is very graphically intense tbh, oh well to each their own.

I can't comment about any of the face recognization as 1st thing I did as I do with any notebook i've purchased or friends purchase is create the recovery disks, get the drivers from the net, and use ABR to install a clean copy of Vista, so i don't got any of the special toshiba features on the notebook (bloatware included)

Well that was really informative for me thanks a lot!! :) really appreciate it
I think I would go with this one only because I prefer a 17" and asus G50Vm-X1 has 15.4".
But I am little "n00b" in the optimization part so I would like to know more about it when I get this because I dont want to be one of those who complain about slow downs or whatever and did you install 32bit or 64 bit vista?which one is better?

and what all drivers did you get?
I know I am going to sound really n00b now but how did you create recovery disks and everything?

Okay for starters, the ASUS has slower memory, a cheaper processor( has 2mb on die L2 cache, the Toshiba has 3mb). As well it has a 9700m GT, which is inferior to the 9700m GTS of the X305 -Q701. To me its smaller and less powerful, to shave off some of the price, I have 32bit windows vista ultimate, at the moment, the 32 bit version has better driver/game support. As for optimization it's fairly simple, and involves going to the control panel as well as running, "msconfig", to enable both cores simultaneously. I think the best upgrade so far is adding a second 7200rpm hard drive. You dont need an extra attachment, as there is a prong on the HDD access bay door that holds the second hard drive in place.

Actually, the reason why I posted it was because it was a comparison between the 8800M GTS and 9700M GTS, something that's been discussed previously. Shouldn't I provide information available on the comparison, if it's already been done?

As for DMC4, the reason in particular is that, it's free to download, has its own benchmarking tool, you can set it to a resolution that all users can use. More importantly, I didn't start the thread. I was merely providing a link to the thread. It's easy for users to just download and run it with a different array of drivers and see how it goes. For example, using FRAPS would use up resources on a computer and provide a gaming experience that would not be as good as it might have been. I think it's a decent tool for benchmarking games. As for whether it's graphically intense, it's not extremely so, but decently enough. The free version of 3dmark06 sets its own resolution, which may be 1280 x 800, 1280 x 854 or 1280 x 768 for 1440 x 900 users. This makes comparisons rather difficult.

Also, the other tests conducted in the thread were on different settings from yours. I'm not invalidating your results, just pointing it out in case others don't notice and wonder about the difference in FPS/rating.

    VERY IMPORTANT!

I'm not saying the 9700M GTS or X305 is bad by any means. I'm not a fan of its color, but beauty is subjective.
