Well I completely overlooked the fact that the 8100x i bought doesnt come with a backlit keyboard which i really wanted. Im trying to see if anyone has any info on upgrading. Straight up swap or any modifications requires? Also best place to purchase one.
After The M4 SSD, 1TB HHD, 8GB Ram and now keyboard i wish i would of gotten atleast a 8102x. But im still very impressed with the I5 version, Gaming is great.

I have an X500 Canadian version with bilingual non backlit keyboard. I really want to upgrade to a better keyboard too.

I removed the keyboard and noticed that that connections for the LED keyboard are there. Just ordered one and will test to see if it works

Kewl keep us informed.

If you have the connector it will work. This mod was even done on X300's, got power from finger print reader slot

Success !!!!!! Great find on ebay for just 20.00 shipped, There are a couple more on ebay and other websites have them in stock with part number A000048080. Very easy swap, 10 Minutes at the very most. Everything works fine, can be left on and turned off, or can be set with a timer without any issues. And looks so much cooler.

Ya I just ordered one from here in Canada. Cost me $56.00 shipped. I got a great deal on my laptop so I dint mind spending a bit for a upgrade keyboard. Just shocked it didnt have a better keyboard since I got every other high end option except backlit keyboard and real fast cpu.

Its a great upgrade. At first I just though it was more for looks, but it sawesome when your surfing online or typing at night. Just makes things easier.

So I just got my new backlit keyboard and its awesome. It actually feels better than the original keyboard as far as the feel of the keys. Anyways the backlighting is awesome, but it goes off after 15 seconds. Pressing Fn-F2 brings up a keboard menu with only the 15 second timer. Is there a way to change this?
-
Nevermind I found it. Its under Toshiba/Utility's/HW setup. You can leave it on for up to 60 seconds, or leave it on permanently. A reboot is required for any changes though.

The new keyboard is the same shiny keys, but they seem to have a better feel as far as squishyness goes. They just feel less squishy, more firm. Having a light is invaluable. Sticking my nose right up to the keyboard in a dark room and fumbling around the keyboard just sucked.

The cheapest I have been seeing them on ebay is $50. Anyone know of any other trusted places to buy one? Or do any of the other Toshiba backlit keyboards also fit, like any of the full sized Satellite keyboards?
-
So if anyone else is looking, I found out that the backlit keyboard for the Qosmio X505 is the same as the Satellite P500, P505 and P505D. Searching for the Satellite keyboard instead of the Qosmio turned up some on ebay in the $25-30 range. That's pretty much the cheapest place I could find them.

Good info, it's a good way to save money in the unfortunate event of having to replace a keyboard.
Thanks for letting us know -
Nice having that keyboard lit, eh! I travel a lot when cabin lights are very low...
My ul30vt was a bit harder, no 5v socket, so we had to pick off a 5v spot and solder wire to MB. Nice that Toshiba included the socket!
