thanks for the disassembly guide! but can you also make a tutorial on how to replace the lcd ribbon. my laptop display is kinda fuzzy (red snow, white-turning to turquoise). I'm really confident that it is the ribbon cable of the lcd. by the way, I also tried reseating the lcd ribbon cable (beside the power socket to the motherboard, right?), but it does not work. I'm just wondering what happened to my laptop. I don't remember it falling or anything. It just turned into this when I opened it the other day.

UsnRoberts Hi good afternoon.
I hope the way I express apologize because I'm Spanish, I do not speak English and I am using a translator.
I'm very grateful for this tutorial has helped me a great help.
I have a Qosmio X770-11W with 2 years and the Micro temperature was quite high, it was clear that we needed a limpieza. He followed your steps and was able to give a good cleaning, and I put the Micro and GPU I think it is the best Thermal Paste, the Arctic Cooling MX-4, I fell Micro temperature 10 º and 3 or 4th of the GPU.
Thank you very much and greetings from Valencia (Spain). -
I am glad my documented endeavor could help you. I think this series of laptop was and is a little capable beast and the performance to cost ratio of the x770 today is a steal. I haven't been on here in a while but when I saw your comment in my email it really made my day! I've been running Assassin's Creed 3 at full settings and always over 40fps and having a blast with mine. Great to hear of your success and happy gaming. Su Inglés es muy grande. Es mi español es malo. Juego feliz a usted! -
Hello. Great guide man . But I have a small question . I have that qosmio random shutdowns "no overheating" that was caused by the factory defected power membrane of this model . So I decided to open up my qosmio x775 and remove the power membrane to get rid of this problem once and forall . So I enabled the option in bios to turn on computer on automatically on opening lid . So I wont need the power button anymore . But my question is . If I removed the power membrane completely from my qosmio . Will this effect the option of the bios to turn on pc automatically on opening lid? Or the power membrance has nothing to do to this method of turning on the pc ? Thanks very much and someone replay asap please.. thanks

No, I've already done that. It may take tapping the other buttons on the touch panel to power it on as well. You don't have to remove it entirely, just disconnect it. It seems all of the X770 / X775 have this problem and the replacements are almost all defective too. It would eventually reoccur. To put simply, this is a design flaw with the laptop. Those who use it for gaming are more likely to run into it as it appears to be heat-related. In regards to other issues, they never applied thermal paste to my CPU or video card. Normally there will be at least some residue after a long period, there was nothing at all. Even so the cooling system is worthless, it can never actually operate at its advertised specifications as it just throttles from overheating.

THREAD NECRO POWERS ACTIVATE!!!
Anywho... alrighty so... my theory is that adding the little copper ramsinks right under the vents, on top of the respective heatsinks themselves, will allow the cooling pad I purchase to actually pull some of the excess heat away... but that's a theory only. o3o
Hoping it's correct, but that's not to happen for a while. =3 -
I guess I'm lucky with the power button membrane, no problems, but I'm still using i5 with little throttling problems unless pushed.
Using the stick on copper bars on top of the heat sinks had no real effect while monitoring with HWiNFO64. This makes sense as the single fan pulls air from around the laptop and through the heat pipe. While the copper pads gets very hot, this hot air is now pulled into fan and through the heat pipe with no real gains. I did see small improvement by using second fan to blow directly on the copper bars but not worth it. Larger capacity heat pipes, like on my Clevo, handles the i7 and 650M gaming temps just fine with no throttling. -

Dear all, is there anyone who is selling a GTX 560m after an upgrade or sth? Any help in finding a cheap and working one? Mine gets the crashed and recovered error every time I try to start an app. I tried all available fixes without luck. So I assume this is a hardware problem. Is it not? I am considering an oven trick? Would that do any harm to the card? Because vşdeo memory gives errors. but not the card itself.

I have seen complete used machines with 560-650 class cards cheap on the marketplace at notebook review. Then you can sell or "part out" your machine to offset cost. GL -

Thanks Hydra, I will have a look but on ebay it is somewhere north of 130 USD plus shipping (and used). I do not know if they had already been bricked and survived by reballing or else. So that is a tough issue.
And about the video mem, I am pretty sure it is because of that since when I start OCCT the card starts at around 120 fps but then suddenly it crashes as soon as the memory consumption kicks in. That was the only indicator of bad vram. -
There are GTX 560M Qosmio X775 replacement cards on Ebay. Unfortunately you can't change to a different card (other than the GTX 560M that is). The BIOS won't boot if you try. I have already.

Thanks for the warning imglidinhere since I was seriously considering gtx 770m as an option. I will wait and see if the 90 ish prices+shipping come back since they run about 140 usd + shipping right now.

"The 570M is recognized by the BIOS, tested by one of the specialists whom I spoke with after he got off work. He says the 570M he used was a standard Clevo card from the Ebay user 'upgradeyourlaptop', I.E. Eurocom. He ran a few tests and found that the TIM used matters a lot in this case because your temperatures will be rather high. Any cooling mods like the ones listed here are advised if they'll work without much of an issue. I cannot post any pictures of this since I've only to take his word from it, however... it's definitely nice to know that there's someone who has attempted it and had some success."
That sucks... -

Thanks for your kind assistance, friends. I have baked the GPU in the oven and it is now working showing video ram as 1536 MB as it used to be. I had the oven set to 200 C for 10 minutes and then put the GPU on an aluminium folio paper with the chip side up with 4 point alu-folio supports below the card for homogenous heating. I baked it for exactly 8 minutes and left it in the oven for about 30 minutes before taking out. It now works. I played Watchdogs for 40 minutes and NBA 2K for a while without a problem. I will do some serious stress testing tonight to see if the solution lasts and stable.
-
So the 570M might work because it's still in teh GTX 500M line, but I know I couldn't get a more recent GPU to work.Which makes me sad...
However I did just swap out the old i7-2760QM from my Alienware to this machine and the temps are about the same with the repaste and all that... so that's cool. =3 -
I have a problem with my cooling. the cpu keeps hitting 80+ degrees while gaming which I just dont want to play with. I already did a repaste and the gpu temps dropped about 15 degrees but the cpu is still too hot.
my fan is also not running hard at all no matter how bloody hot my laptop gets you can barrely hear it and theres hardly any air getting thrue the heatsink. im currently on bios 1.3, ive tried 1.1 and 1.6 and 2.1
I remember the fan being able to blow quite hard when I bought this laptop so does anyone know of a solution? -
Look hard at the pictures in the first post. I think you missed a flip up connector...

Well, time to dig this up. I have a Qosmio X770 that has very hot CPU temps but rather average GPU temps. Already tried a repaste, didn't amount to much. It can go to 90°C and higher while playing, then "naturally" the CPU throttles to avoid over-heating. Do you believe copper heatsinks could help? How does it works?
EDIT: The fan kicks in properly, but it pretty much runs in vain trying to cool the CPU but not being able to do so properly and efficiently.
EDIT2: Idle, I'm in the low 60s°C -
Sounds like it's a bad repaste. I'd try again but with some higher quality stuff like GC Extreme since it's on par with the other, more well-known, stuff out there.
You can get GC Extreme from newegg for a fair price. Comes in a 3.5g tube for like... $10 I think?
But that's what I used and it only breaks 90*C in games that fully use the GPU and fully tax the CPU.
It's also worth asking what CPU are you using? I've got the 2760QM. -
I already tried different pastes because the first time I did it, I believed it was the paste. One I got from a friend working with computers, and then I bit the bullet for a Artic MX-4. Given that GPU temps dropped, the repaste is good IMO. The CPU is the i7 2630QM.
See this thread where I talked about that and was advised to get a better paste.

Might as well update. I checked the paste job just in case. It's like I've never put any (put about a rice grain each on CPU and GPU). Most got to the side of the chip. I've put it back to the center of the PC then played a bit. It held in the 60/70s for about 20 minutes, then gradually raised back to "very high". Right now it's holding in the 70s to the low 80s. MX-4 is very liquid for sure; but so liquid it doesn't stay in place? Smells suspicious.
EDIT: Nevermind, nothing changed. I'd wish I could try another paste, but it kinda discourages me. -
I don't know if it is the paste or not, but I don't think it is. Ensure that the screws holding the heat sink to the chips are as tight as safely possible. I highly recommend The Cooler Master U3 Cooler Master NotePal U3 - Laptop Cooling Pad with Three Configurable 80 mm Fans - Silver - Newegg.com
My friend has been having some recent issues with BF4 but has no issues with League. He doesn't have the cooler. If you are looking for a significant change, paste will never do it. You need to change what you are feeding it whether it be amount of airflow, temperature of air ect. Thanks for the update! -
For "fun" I decided to experiment something. While playing a non GPU intensive game, I used Throttlestop to maintain a constant CPU clock while I used a Energy plan that makes the fan function at lowest speed. CPU temperature did not budge much. Well a bit higher, but nothing very significant. So when the fan is at max speed it doesn't cool the CPU properly. However it cools the GPU very well. Well, I may need to recycle my PC and change it for a tower, I don't think I can solve my problem by my own means.
Again, thanks for the replies be it in this thread or the other one I linked. Very much appreciated. -
Hello UsnRoberts
I am trying to do a thermal repaste on my Qosmio X770 and have followed your excellent pictures. I am having one issue which is preventing my from moving forward and I am hoping you can offer some guidance. I have attached a picture and circled the items. Basically, I cannot figure out how to remove the white plugs from the fan, speakers, etc. They appear to be snapped in and won't budge and I am afraid I'm going to pull the wires out. Do I need some kind of special tool?
Thanks for your help.

Hi, some good info to share with you guys...
http://tech.nexicore.com/downloads/qosimo_X770.PDF
Unfortunately, my GPU does not work anymore. I don't know if a thermal repaste will solve the problem...
I got blue screens while playing in the beginning, and Windows shutdowns nowadays. I disable it in the device's manager, and now I have a stable-and-heavy laptop with a "gorgeous" Intel graphics to play minesweeper...so dramatic...ok, I can play Darksouls 2 at 20 FPS in 720p.
It's very hard to find replacements, and the only one I found it's too expensive:
http://www.laptopking.com/kingpartdetails.asp?ref=4167&category=boards
Have you some tips?
Any will be very much appreciable.
Tnx in advance. -
At this point, I'd say perhaps trying to go for a newer card like the 765M and looking for an unlocked BIOS for this line would be your only option. I mean, there USED to be an outlet that sold those GPUs on fleabay... but I'm just as bummed as you are.
I'll look about and help with what I can.
I'm on Overclock.net more often than here if you're needing more advice on the matter. I know how horrendous it is to play on the HD3000. >.> -

Found one for $200 less than what you found it for. Still highly overpriced, but if it gets your laptop working again for a while, I don't see why not?
I've been there saving pennies and nickels trying to save up for a new laptop. It's not fun. :|
