I was pleased with the performance my i5-2430M over my T9300. My new travel gamer has the i7-3610QM. This thing is twice as fast as my 2430M and ran 4C cooler when testing with IBTest. This was in a tiny 11" format so I would hope the X870 can do better. This is a very nice CPU.

The non 3D versions should be killer around $1100 price point. Still no takers?

I have the new Toshiba X875-Q7280 and it's an awesome machine (if you like Toshiba). I replaced the 1600 by 900 screen with a non-3D 1920 by 1080 screen and now the machine is perfect. Much lighter than many 17 inch laptops in it's class. Only real downside is the heat being blown out the lone right vent can really toast your mouse hand...but at least the machine doesn't appear to throttle. Runs all my games smooth at max settings at 1920...very nice.

Any chance on letting us in on the details of that screen? I'm sure many others will want to know how to upgrade their screen from a 1600x900 to a 1080p screen.

Keep up the good work and thanks for the info

    Sure. Will be glad to.

I decided on the X875-Q7280 due to the price...but made up my mind early on that I wanted a 256gb SSD (Samsung 830)...and have been waiting on the 1920 res screens to come back in stock at Screen Country. Most of the LCD screen replacement places have been out of stock on the 3D 120hz version of the higher end Toshiba X875 screens:

Toshiba Qosmio X875 Series LAPTOP LCD SCREEN FROM $44. HP ACER TOSHIBA DELL APPLE COMPAQ. Notebook screen, laptop display, notebook lcd, laptop tft, screen DELL, ACER lcd, screens SONY, lcd DELL, ACER lcd.

The good news is the screen in these Toshiba's is the identical size, backlight type, pin connection, etc as the replacement screens for the MSI GT70's:

MSI GT70 LAPTOP LCD SCREEN FROM $44. HP ACER TOSHIBA DELL APPLE COMPAQ. Notebook screen, laptop display, notebook lcd, laptop tft, screen DELL, ACER lcd, screens SONY, lcd DELL, ACER lcd.

So, I picked up the $96 matte screen 1920 by 1080 and installed it this past week. Only took about 15 minutes and looks amazing. Colors really pop and I'm back to the 1080p res that I am used to. Plus, the 670m Nvidia video card in the X875 has no problem pushing the higher resolution in the games I play.

I got the Samsung SSD for about $200 off Amazon and the screen cost me just north of $100 with next day shipping from Screen Country...and I got the laptop itself for around $1200. So, for a grand total of around $1500, I have a really capable and fast SSD-based Toshiba with the red metal design I like.

    Thanks for the info!

For the pure gaming aspect, I wonder what the FPS would be between the two screens at same settings?

My dinky 650M would choke at either resolution when all set to high or ultra.

Now a user of reading glasses, old fart that I am, I love the 17" mid rez screens. 5 years ago I had to use the 120 dpi setting on my WUXGA.

What's with Toshiba for not offering several screens? They need to do more to stand out against the competition, IMHO.

BTW, I'm using a cheap three fan laptop cooler which does a great job AND will raise those hot vents 2-3 inches. Hopefully over your mouse hand?

I haven't really noticed any kind of performance negatives as far as FPS going from 1600 by 900 to 1920 by 1080. I don't take the time to benchmark my machines. I have no doubt there's probably a slight difference, but everything I play is still north of 30fps (according to my eyes)...guessing of course. I play GW2, Diablo 3, Torchlight 2, NFS Hot Pursuit...COD MW3, etc....

If the X875 had the dual heat vents that the Asus G75 series had, it would be the perfect computer for me. As it is, it's still a 9 out of 10 due to the heat out of the right side. I'd recommend this setup to anyone looking to save some money, but still have a slick looking fast mobile gaming/productivity machine.

Wow this is awesome! A couple of questions:

I wasn't sure from your post, so is the screen you got 3D? Because I believe even the lower end X875's can generate 3D.

    Will this void the warranty?

Honestly, I am still very happy with my Q893 I bought a little over two years ago with the 460m GPU, and as I said earlier in the thread, I haven't upgraded from this lappy yet because I love the aesthetics of that gen of Qosmios AND, more importantly, I really like my 18.4" screen.

So for me to upgrade, one of two things has to happen: Either my laptop will not be able to play the current games at acceptable resolutions, in which case I will do so grudgingly, OR they will have to make the 18.4 inch screen available again. lol I have the feeling I will be forced to upgrade by about next year and Toshiba won't be going back to the 18.4.

As I said a couple posts back, I got a non-3D screen that actually was intended as a replacement for a MSI GT70. I checked the hardware ID and it's a Hannspree screen and I'm quite happy with the color reproduction.

I can't say for sure, but my guess is replacing the screen would definitely void the warranty due to the intrusiveness of the install unless the manufacturer authorizes you to do it ahead of time.

Like you said, as long as your system plays the games you play the way you want to play them, I wouldn't sweat an upgrade at this point. That being said, I do really like this Toshiba (with upgrades)...now exactly the way I want it with improved screen and SSD drive.

Awesome! Sounds like you got yourself an amazing lappy. Congrats on the purchase and the cool upgrades. One thing I have to say is that voiding a warranty on a device like a gaming laptop is tricky at best. I had a bunch of problems with my Qosmio that were all thankfully covered by Toshiba's warranty. So I am a little skittish about intentionally voiding a warranty right out of the gate, but given your results, I won't lie, it is tempting!

If you decide to upgrade the screen (I've upgraded 3 or 4 over the years)...the chassis removal was one of the easiest I've dealt with. 4 screws hidden behind the rubber covers...then just a handful of screws on the metal frame and you're good to go.

I was torn about possibly going for a GT70 with the 680m video card...but most models were north of $2000 with a SSD...so basically for around $700 less, I have everything that model had except for the higher end video...and for me, the 670m is great. I would question whether it's capable of pushing the native res in 3D...but that's just my opinion.

Hope it works out good for you if you decide to make the jump!

What are the temps like in games? How hot does it get?

That's the one thing that kept me with this Alienware to be entirely honest. :( It was just too hot for my tastes. According to the reviews it hits 100*C for the CPU and around 90*C for the GPU when both are fully stressed. :(

I've never measured the temps, but yes, the system blows super hot air out of the right vent...not great for right-handed mouse people. The key for me is the system never seems to throttle and has no signs of instability (BSOD, random crashes, etc). I would prefer it had vents in the back like the Asus G75 series....but all things considered, I'm very happy with this system.

    Hello there

if it was possible to get an X870 with i7 3610 - 8 GB RAM - 750 GB hybrid drive - DVD-RW burner and GTX 670 for ~820$, would that be considered a decent deal? I was looking for an Alienware or a Clevo, but a new shop is opening close to me and they have some pretty large discounts on the opening day. The normal price for this is ~1500$. I can't figure out wether to buy this or buy what I intended in the first place (7970 :D ) which is 3x the price.

I haven't been gaming a lot the last couple of years since my laptop is pretty weak, but I would like to play games like BF3 and Borderlands 2. How noisy are these machines during idle? As far as I can read they are quite loud during load.

I am not sure that the laptop has a 1080p screen - it looks like it has also been made with a 900p?

All laptops have rough edges, including my Clevo. For that price, it's very good! The 900p screen will give you an edge in FPS if you can live with it. My eye balls are wearing out so love my 17" 900P screen, ymmv, and you can swap it our down the road. If money no object then hot dual GPU machines!

BF3, Borderlands and Skyrim will be NO problem for the GTX 670, heck they run fine on my 650/560M. Sorry can't judge the noise at full bore game. None of my laptops are very loud or buzzy/whine. YMMV

Hi all, I'm reading the forum since I am interested in buying a laptop both to navigate, play and use photoshop and illustrator. I thought at first that the Qosmio X770 might be enough, but I read somewhere that you have problems especially what is the bios.

I found a store that is selling the asus G75VW and qosmio x875 and let me know which one would be the best option. Clearly, to avoid overheating, I will use a cooler( COOLER NB 17/19 CM STORM SF-1 ).

Either laptop will work, both have good quality and performance.
However, you may want to wait a couple months and see if new models are launched where the GPU is replaced with a GTX 670M X

    Good luck

I just found a X870 for a very affordable price and would like to know if this laptop i possible to upgrade in the future, with say an Ati radeon hd 7970 or such? I´ve read that it got some heat issues, is it very common/fixable?

    yours sincerely

GPU upgrade is plausible, but most likely not probable. Also, Toshiba has never used AMD for their Qosmio line, only nvidia.
If you want a laptop with a guaranteed GPU upgradability, then I would go with a CLEVO/SAGER or Alienware.

I am not aware of the heat issues. However, the x775 Qosmio had that problem [mainly due to the 1 fan design], it is it probable the x870 also has it [since the x770 and x870 are very similar in design]; although I would think the heat issue would be somewhat corrected for the x870.

    Good luck

I wouldn't attempt to upgrade the GPU to something hotter than a 75w TDP. It gets hot enough as is. :S

OK folks, so where is the Qosmio X875 Owners forum, or is there not one in existence?? I am looking at buying the Qosmio X875-Q7390, but I'm trying to find a forum that is discussing it prior to making the purchase.. I cannot believe that this is not a laptop that is talked about more on this forum.. So if you have one of these, please either point me to the forum, or please provide your personal feedback..

    Thanks!

The lack of posts here is not necessarily a bad thing.
Most people only come to places like this when they are having a problem with the system, so few posts can also mean, few problems.

It's a rare breed of person who goes out of their way to post about a system that has no problems, simply for the joy of doing so. For me, it is a way of sharing, and learning from others, but not everyone is so into their systems that they feel the need to go somewhere to post about it when everything is running fine.

I have an X875-Q7380, and I love it. Nothing has slowed it down in the slightest yet, and there are multiple things on this unit that can be upgraded to further improve performance. For only a few hundred bucks, I can upgrade my $1,200 investment to nearly the same specs as their $2,700 system.. I'll save about $1,000 when it is done.

Thanks for the reply.. Question, how many fans does the X875 have? I'm hoping it has 2, 1 for the CPU and 1 for the GPU.. Single fan units usually have heat dissipation issues.. Does your X875 have any heat issues? Do you know what temps are running on your system? You can install a small gadget to detect this.. Here is the link:
    CoreTemp: Core Temp
CoreTemp Gadget: Core Temp - Add Ons

Will be checking back to see how it goes.. Thanks!

The 680 won't likely fit. Toshiba has always used a proprietary design on there graphics cards, so it is highly unlikely that you would get it to work.
I cannot say for sure it won't, because I have not as yet opened my X875, I'm just saying it would be a true miracle if you could get one to fit and work.

first post, so greetings to all from South Africa

I have a Toshiba Qosmio X870-F0086. Im very happy with performance, and virtually everything about it, except for one thing.

According to the website, the external resolution is limited to 2048*1536. For this reason, I cannot buy a new 2560x1440 monitor and connect it. I find this really hard to believe, and Im reading reports from all over the internet of people using various ways to get around HDMI limitations on laptops.

So I guess my question is, does anyone have a X870 connected to a 2560x1440 monitor via HDMI? Refresh rate?

Does anyone know what HDMI version is on our Laptop?

Im googling a lot to try and find out, but I am having very very little luck. So Im looking for someone with first hand experience.

    cheers
