ok so basically when i listen to music on my laptop with the speakers as opposed to using headphones, it sounds different, there seems to be a strange rattling or somewhat high pitch sound that shows up during the track.
    is this normal?

I've never heard this, though, I think the sound is a bit "tinny". Does this happen when you play an Audio CD (as opposed to MP3/WMA/Other compressed audio)? It's quite possible the anomaly is in the audio source and because the speaker characteristics are different from your headphones, that the crackle is just "lost" when you play through your headphones.
